Fashion
GOOD MORNING: New reverse modes

In the 1920s, women raised their hems as a sign of independence. Flappers, as they were called, were worse, elaborate beaded dresses that sparkled at night and during the day, they were sailor dresses.
A recent trip to some clothing stores left me nostalgic for those 20 years rather than the ones we live in now. Someone somewhere decided that we women anyway wanted to dress like we had just left the scene in “Little House on the Prairie.”
Laura Ingalls Wilder characters would look right at home in some of the dresses I saw at a local Target store this past weekend and they even had booties on sale that looked like the ones worn in this show. of TV. They were, I guess, meant to be spring outfits, but it looked like we were preparing for the dullest spring in world history.
This is not, of course, the first time the prairie look has been on trend, but at least the last time the colors were vibrant. If fashion continues to take inspiration from TV shows, I would much prefer if it turned to “Bridgerton” or continued the 1980s trend. However, I will do a few, there were a bit of meadow style then too.
One can only hope that the longer, flowing skirts of these country dresses mean that jeans with watermelon waist holes are going out of fashion again. As a 1980s teenager, I can appreciate a cut or two in a pair of jeans, but lately the stuff I’ve seen on some people seems to be trying to see how well they could cut and keep the garment together. .
I think it’s interesting that at a time when most of us are having fun like we’ve never had fun trying to stop the spread of a deadly virus, our forward-thinking leaders think we want to give the impression that we are not even capable. of pleasure.
Maybe instead of showing our ankles only in country girl chic style, we should opt to upgrade the materials used for our beloved yoga pants and sassy t-shirts? Or go back to the very respectable dark, unperforated denim with a nice crisp shirt and blazer?
Fashion has to be synonymous with fun and functionality and I don’t see in this new trend either. I have to say that my suggestion to go with the gorgeous styles shown on Netflix’s “Bridgerton” probably wouldn’t hold on to the functionality part of it. I’m not really suggesting that corsets are needed again or all of those petticoats, as dreamy as they make a dress. Maybe 50s clothes would be a good compromise? However, we will need to make the pants acceptable for women to wear in public. I am not in favor of any trend that tells a woman to wear a skirt or a dress. Some of us just aren’t right for them.
On an interesting side note, I saw several social media posts suggesting that the new fad this spring would be men’s dresses. Maybe that’s what the fashion designers had in mind as a customer for their “Little House on the Prairie” dresses? I’m saying if we put everything on the men in skirts, they should all wear kilts with the ruffled shirts and jackets on top and the long socks and moccasins on their feet. Of course, the wool will likely be a little uncomfortable once the heat returns to Texas in April.
Happy birthday to Bobby Brock and Audrey Wallace, both from Sherman. Happy birthday to Howard and Ora Snell from Sherman, 20.
