Ontario home order starts Thursday

Toronto – Ontario Premier Doug Ford issued a stay-at-home order effective Thursday. Everyone should stay at home and only go out for essential travel, he said at a press conference on Tuesday afternoon. If possible, please work from home, he said, pointing out that this was what happened in April during the first wave of the pandemic, but that is no longer the case despite the closure of non-essential businesses. Under the new measures, open-air public gatherings and social gatherings are further limited to a limit of five people, with a few exceptions. In addition, people are required to wear a mask or face shield in indoor areas of businesses or open organizations. Wearing a mask or face shield is now recommended outdoors when people cannot physically walk more than two meters. All non-essential retail stores, including hardware stores, liquor retailers, and those offering curbside pickup or delivery, must open no earlier than 7 a.m. and close no later than 8 p.m. . Restricted hours of operation do not apply to stores that primarily sell food, pharmacies, gas stations, convenience stores and restaurants for take out or delivery. Non-essential construction is further restricted, including construction below grade, exempt from surveying. Solicitor General Sylvia Jones said enforcement of the rules would be strict, including penalties of up to one year in prison. Under those arrangements, officers can also impose fines and disperse crowds outside of more than five people, she said. The premier said the province is entering its second state of emergency which will last at least 28 days. Acknowledging that Ontarians are fed up with COVID and existing restrictions, he said one-third of Ontarians are not following public health guidelines. I know the stay at home order is a drastic step that we do not take lightly, he added. Everyone stays at home. The bad actors who are caught, they will be fined. Noting that he does not believe in curfews like the one implemented in Quebec, the Premier said he was counting on the people of Ontario to comply with this order. I believe in the people of Ontario, he said. Everyone worked together. The last thing I ever believed in was having a curfew that when you come out of your driveway the police chase you. People will have the freedom to leave their homes, but all gatherings are prohibited, he said. If you need to walk your dog, take him for a walk, he says. All we ask is the cooperation of the people of Ontario. Please stay home. As part of these measures, schools in the worst affected areas, including Windsor / Essex, Peel, Toronto, Hamilton and York, will be closed for in-person learning until February 10. In other regions, recommendations will be made on January 20. northern Ontario, which is already open, will remain so. New guidelines are in place for in-person learning, including wearing masks for Grades 3 to 3 and requirements for wearing masks outdoors. In addition, there will be improved screening protocols and expanded targeted testing in schools. He pointed out that one problem is when young people go out with their friends, don’t wear masks and come home, which can pass the virus on to their parents. In turn, it is passed on to grandparents who may end up in the hospital and die from the disease. If you love your grandparents and I know you love them, please go through the process, Premier Ford said. Premier Ford vowed to descend like an 800lb gorilla into big box stores, noting that they were not meeting the guidelines for 50% capacity that were already in place. He said those measures are in place because projections show the number of COVID cases, including the new UK variant, is increasing rapidly in the province. The occupancy rate of intensive care units with COVID-19 patients is now over 400 beds and is expected to reach 1,000 beds by early February, which could overwhelm Ontario hospitals. The number of COVID-19-related deaths continues to rise and is expected to double from 50 to 100 deaths per day by the end of February. The healthcare system is on the verge of collapse with never-before-seen levels of COVID-19. There will soon be some really dark days ahead, he said. However, the Premier said the people of Ontario have the courage to go through the worst days to come. Noting that the province has nearly 15 million people, he said it was important to work together. Stay home, save lives, protect our health care system, he said. The premier said it was important to spend the next few months as Ontario plans a massive vaccine rollout in April, May and June. To date, 130,000 doses have been administered in Ontario. He said the province pushed the federal government to increase doses so more people could be vaccinated earlier. Deputy Premier Christine Elliot pointed out 5,000 people have died in the province from COVID and 41 died on Monday. We need to change our models of mobility, he said. You need to stay home as much as possible. Employees who can work from home must do so, she added. The province will also increase testing, including rapid tests.
