Wedding designer South Shields turns to sewing free scrubs for the NHS

She is used to creating unique wedding dresses with intricate patterns which she creates herself with love.

But now, this seamstress from South Shields produces large amounts of identical outfits – and she couldn’t be happier to do so.

Aimee Veitch, who runs Corsetry and Couture in the Rekendyke industrial area, is one of the many seamstresses in the Northeast who answered the call to help the NHS provide their scrubs.

More and more exfoliation kits are now required in hospitals following the coronavirus pandemic. Protective clothing can be washed at high heat to kill any potential infection, and is now worn by many other doctors, nurses and health care workers who would normally wear their own clothes to work.

In response to demand, “ scrub centers ” have been set up across the country, connecting professional and amateur manufacturers and routing finished garments to hospitals, care homes, general practitioner surgeries and other areas where they are needed.

Aimée and mom Jan Wilson are part of a large group of locals who sew scrubs, deliver them to hospitals or help provide resources. Each pair requires between 12 and 15 materials to make, so Aimee created a Go Fund Me page to help the group by fabric. She set a goal of 300 – but in 24 hours, she had 1,200 and is now approaching 2,000 – which could be enough to make more than 160 sets.

A fabric donation from neighboring BST Fabrics also helped the team get started in sewing.

Aimee, 38, said: “We have come together in a small group because we want to help, not just the NHS but other key workers and caregivers who need scrubs.

“I normally make bridal clothes and custom corsetry, but everything is on hold now: the brides who were to marry had to postpone or cancel, everything stopped overnight. The last two weeks before the closings were really moving, because I was dealing with wives who just didn’t know what was going to happen: I didn’t really think about myself until everything stopped.

“So I thought, what should I do now? I’ve seen people scrub, and I’m part of a group of companies called Mint Business Club, so I suggested that some of them we small businesses come together and help. “

Aimee provided over 400 documents herself, and then started buying more with the money donated. She has hired NHS representatives in the Northeast who have confirmed that more than 15,000 additional scrub sets are required, and her group’s contributions would be greatly appreciated.

Completed scrubs, which people make at home or in their empty business premises, will be delivered to the Aimee unit, where they will be sent for use in the NHS of the region, to hospitals, ambulance and more.
