Free dresses and more at the Extravaganza Ball Gown at Meadowbrook Public Library

MONTGOMERY COUNTY, VA (WFXR) – It's almost prom season and with that comes a list of things to do, including figuring out who will be your date, how you will get there, and maybe the the most stressful and costly item on the list – dress.

On March 5, the Meadowbrook Public Library organizes its 8th edition of the Extravaganza annual ball gown to help make the ball memorable without the pressure of spending an excessive amount of money for the unique event.

Over 400 dresses will be on display for students' choice in sizes from zero to 28. The dresses are free. In addition to bringing a free dress home, students can choose a pair of shoes, a clutch and jewelry from Paparazzi Bling.

The library collects new and slightly used dresses all year round. Library staff and volunteers sort through donated dresses, ensuring they are in very good condition before being optionally available for the event.

This year, the library received a costume donation so that young men could participate.

Event sponsors donated gift cards and gift baskets. So whether or not a student finds an item to take home, they have a chance of winning the draw.

"It is fulfilling to see young women choosing a dress that suits them perfectly," said Denise Lane, a library staff member who participated in the extravagance for six years.

Whatever the economic background of a person, everyone is invited to participate in this event, if only to put their name in the raffle. Juniors and seniors from Montgomery and Floyd counties, as well as New River Valley are invited to participate.

"The library is more than books," said Cindy Minnick, the library branch supervisor.

"The library offers these kinds of programs because we want to help our community."

The event will take place on March 5 from 3:30 p.m. to 6 p.m. at the Meadowbrook Public Library, located at 267 Alleghany Spring Road. in Shawsville.
