Bad hair days: Virus confuses stylists in a fashion capital

NEW YORK Sara Gilmore swapped her hairbrush for a paintbrush.

The owner of a hair salon and watercolor enthusiast found an unexpected audience for his paintings of Brooklyn flowers and brown stones. Since closing her Sara June salon last month, she and her employees have raised thousands of dollars by selling homemade pieces on the company’s Instagram.

“I never showed anyone my art,” said Gilmore. “Rotating my business into an art business is really funny but great. I am happy to have at least this skill set that I could earn a little bit of income.”

Hair salons and salons that provide New Yorkers with cuts, colors, manicures and more go to great lengths to ensure that their small businesses can survive even after the house stay order is received. State be lifted. Generous clients supplement the income of stylists who depend on unemployment benefits, while hairdressers see the ugly results of haircuts at home and hope that demand will return as soon as the social distancing measures are lifted.

“It sounds easier than that, I guess,” joked John Vezza, owner of Astor Place Hairstylists in Manhattan. “Always use a good surgeon and a good barber.”

First, these stores must survive the closure. Some homeowners find it difficult to get federal loans to help pay employees, and many worry that they’ll run far below capacity if they have to reopen under distancing restrictions.

“I think everyone is concerned about how it will be when we return,” said Gilmore.

Gilmore released all of his 10-person staff in March and asked them to apply for unemployment benefits. Government checks helped, but they also received significant financial support from customers.

The salon raised $ 3,500 for employees through its online art sale, and other customers sent donations directly to stylists. Gilmore also sells do-it-yourself color kits, earning around $ 5,000, which reduced rents and other overhead costs.

“People are very attached to their hairdressers, and we as hairdressers are very attached to our customers,” said Gilmore. “I think the community that is built around the service of well-being is a really strong community.”

Some salon owners have been luckier than others.

Alexander Delacqua, who operates Delacqua Salon & Medi Spa in Brooklyn, said its owners were “angels”. He has been in the same place for 18 years and the owner of the building offers flexibility on rental payments.

This allows Delacqua to divert resources to its 35 employees.

“I want to take care of them,” he said. “They deserve this, and I don’t want to lose them.”

Retail accounted for approximately 20% of Delacqua’s business before the pandemic, and was able to maintain some sales through the company’s website. Like Gilmore, he also prepares DIY root color kits.

He was also among the first round candidates to have been approved for a loan under the paycheck protection program, although he has not yet received his money.

Vezza did not even go that far during his first candidacy. The owner of Astor Place Hairstylists said he had “voraciously” tried to get a loan under the federal program, but found it “almost impossible”.

“The banking system has really, really dropped the ball by giving money to little guys like me,” he said.

Vezza expects it can stay afloat another two months without reopening, but not much longer. Even when home stay orders are lifted, there will be difficulties.

Delacqua and Vezza have a rare advantage among New York stores. Delacqua has three floors and Astor Place Hairstylists has 40 haircuts.

Gilmore’s situation is more typical. Its owner was not flexible and social distancing in his small store would require a functioning significantly below its capacity.

She sees little to gain from paycheck protection loans as they are structured. In order to be eligible for loan forgiveness, she should re-hire all of her staff by June 30 and use 75% of the loan directly on pay.

“They are pressuring small business owners to take over their employees before we even open our doors,” she said. “And then potentially having to fire them if we don’t open on time or if the money stops coming.”

Gilmore needs capital for costs like rent, paying down debt, and exploring alternative sources of income in the short and medium term, she said.

With that, she could bring her employees back when the business was ready. Payday loans, with all their restrictions, will not help him reach his ultimate goal by keeping his stylists employed for the long term.

With these concerns in mind, Gilmore and other Brooklyn women entrepreneurs launched We Built This NYC last week. The business owners’ coalition is pushing for rent relief, rental negotiations and better representation.

“We are torn down,” said Gilmore. “We have built a business in an expensive city, and we are here to survive.”

What Are The Main Benefits Of Comparing Car Insurance Quotes Online

LOS ANGELES, CA / ACCESSWIRE / June 24, 2020, / Compare-autoinsurance.Org has launched a new blog post that presents the main benefits of comparing multiple car insurance quotes. For more info and free online quotes, please visit https://compare-autoinsurance.Org/the-advantages-of-comparing-prices-with-car-insurance-quotes-online/ The modern society has numerous technological advantages. One important advantage is the speed at which information is sent and received. With the help of the internet, the shopping habits of many persons have drastically changed. The car insurance industry hasn't remained untouched by these changes. On the internet, drivers can compare insurance prices and find out which sellers have the best offers. View photos The advantages of comparing online car insurance quotes are the following: Online quotes can be obtained from anywhere and at any time. Unlike physical insurance agencies, websites don't have a specific schedule and they are available at any time. Drivers that have busy working schedules, can compare quotes from anywhere and at any time, even at midnight. Multiple choices. Almost all insurance providers, no matter if they are well-known brands or just local insurers, have an online presence. Online quotes will allow policyholders the chance to discover multiple insurance companies and check their prices. Drivers are no longer required to get quotes from just a few known insurance companies. Also, local and regional insurers can provide lower insurance rates for the same services. Accurate insurance estimates. Online quotes can only be accurate if the customers provide accurate and real info about their car models and driving history. Lying about past driving incidents can make the price estimates to be lower, but when dealing with an insurance company lying to them is useless. Usually, insurance companies will do research about a potential customer before granting him coverage. Online quotes can be sorted easily. Although drivers are recommended to not choose a policy just based on its price, drivers can easily sort quotes by insurance price. Using brokerage websites will allow drivers to get quotes from multiple insurers, thus making the comparison faster and easier.
