Apparel rental industry says operating costs would exceed sales if they reopen on Friday

EL PASO, Texas (KTSM) – El Paso’s retail stores will be able to open at 25% of capacity on Friday. However, not all companies will choose to reopen.

One owner says it’s a tough choice, especially for her, because it’s ball season. Well, it would have been.

As you drive down Mesa Street in West El Paso, you will notice a sign saying “New prom collection, rent or buy”.

This sign was installed just a few days before Runway Glow Dress Rental closed in mid-March.

The owner of Runway dress rental says that even if they can open doesn’t mean they will have customers.

“I would say we literally didn’t make any sales,” said Marianna Pena, owner of Runway Glow.

Runway Glow handles both the rental and sale of clothing. However, since the Home Stay orders went into effect, only one dress has been sold.

“All the others, they were canceled or postponed. If you know something, we lose money because we reimburse dresses that we had already rented, it would unfortunately be more like a negative percentage, “said Pena.

Runway Glow says they will not open on Friday May 1 nor have they opened.

“Even if we were to walk on the sidewalk or open or even make an appointment, people will not come, we do not expect people to show up. So, like I said before, I think it would just cost us more to stay open or open rather than stay closed, ”said Pena.

Employees of the clothing store were put on leave.

“We are really trying not to make this break up we know you because it is a family business. My mom is helping my best friends to work with me, so it’s definitely something we don’t want to see die” said Pena.

However, Pena says she hopes the weddings, quinceaneras and events have just been postponed and will be rescheduled and that they can resume their activities as usual.

“They have to happen eventually, you will not cancel your marriage, so I think they will happen again but maybe on a smaller scale at first,” said Pena.

Pena says she plans to reopen but not yet. She added that if they reopened Friday to bring all the employees back, they would lose money because operating costs would exceed sales.

For now, all of the dresses will stay on the shelves until the celebrations can start again.
