Fashion in Film exhibit at the Lois Jett Historical Costume Collection Gallery – News
The fashions are reflected in the films of the 1960s, 1970s and 1980s.
Lois Jett Historical Costume Collection (LJHCC) from the Department of Family Sciences and Consumer Affairs at Illinois State University invites the public to the new collections exhibit, Fashion in Film: As Seen on the Silver Screen, until August 28.
As seen on the Silver Screen presents 21 sets inspired by the film. The films range from 1939 to 2001. The sets inspired by these films date from the 1910s to the late 1990s. Visitors learn the history of films, creators, fashion trends and the migration of trends .
The exhibit was planned and installed by students from the Illinois State Fashion Design and Merchandising Program. According to the main curators of the exhibition, Sydney Christenson and Daisy Oregon, the aim is to highlight fashion in cinema and its role in society, throughout the last century.
Christenson said: Fashion in Film presents historical clothing that depicts a particular period with precision: how each film made a fashion movement with what the character was wearing and how the clothing made such a statement. This exhibition also presents relevant designers who were the visionaries behind such iconic looks in cinema, which were then passed on to societal trends.
Highlighting fashion trends in cinema is important for understanding the emergence and migration of trends. Oregon said: In addition to the history of cinema, the exhibit will focus on the Anti-Fashions that emerged or were featured in the film. The exhibit will also illustrate the theory of descent in relation to cinema, how trends started or were popularized in cinema, and how the trend spread to the masses.
This free exhibit is located at 126 Turner Hall on the United States campus and is open to campus and the surrounding community.
The LJHCC was created in 1962 by Lois Jett, professor in the Department of Family and Consumer Sciences. Over the years, the collection has grown to more than 2,000 items of men's, women's and children's clothing and related artifacts from around the world, dating from the 1840s to the present day. The opening hours of the gallery until April 30 are Mondays and Wednesdays from 9 a.m. to 10:30 a.m. and Thursdays from 8 a.m. to noon.
