Sixteen New Zealanders are stranded on board the cruise ship Covid-19 off the coast of Uruguay.

Foreign Secretary Winston Peters said in a statement that a Medificac chartered plane carrying cruise passengers in New Zealand and Australia, arranged by cruise company Aurora Expeditions, recently departed from Montevideo, Uruguay.

The flight is scheduled to land in Melbourne tomorrow morning.

The medivac plane chartered by the 13th New Zealand government will then take off from Melbourne to Auckland Airport. Three New Zealanders based in Australia will continue crossing Tasman.

“The New Zealanders are in a real danger, as they cannot take shelter safely on the plane and are not in a position to return home through commercial means,” Peters said.

“Their immediate return to New Zealand is a very welcome result.”

All passengers on board the aircraft were treated as positive Covid-19 as a precaution after most passengers in Greg Mortimer were positive about the disease.

“A lot of work has been done to help all 16 New Zealanders, who are in dangerous situations and very limited options,” said Peters.

“We greatly appreciate the assistance we received from the Aurora missions, and the Governments of Uruguay and Australia, to make this return journey possible.”

Peters said consular officials were forced to move “in very complex conditions every day to find successful solutions,” adding that government-chartered flights were not always reliable at all locations.

He said: “Our advice to New Zealanders abroad is to stay in a safe place, or to go home commercially.”

Passengers will immediately go to quarantine after arriving home.
