Senator Bernie Sanders of Vermont currently heads the Democratic Party primaries, a primary that pits different party factions, centrists and leftists, doing their laundry in public.
Diverse opinions within a political party are healthy. However, in our country, with a two-party system, it is much more difficult to vote for these various manifests in the ballot boxes. The Republican Party has been reduced to an almost monolithic movement supporting the outgoing president, whatever his behavior or his politics. The GOP leadership reminds me of the annual meeting of the National People's Congress in Beijing, automatons touting the leader of the party (Xi Jinping). Democrats are much more democratic and transparent.
Senator Sanders claims to be a democratic socialist, a label that resonates negatively among many Americans, especially those like me who lived during the Cold War. GOP fodder. Some people confuse it with communism. It is not the same. It refers to a capitalist government (free market economy), which also takes into account the basic needs of its citizens, such as their health, child care and social equity, such as gender equality in terms of remuneration in the workplace.
Social democracy only works if all citizens participate and contribute, rich and poor, with the common feeling of being one nation. At the moment, the United States is a work in progress since our history and our culture privilege the individual. Other countries, Sweden and much of Western Europe, capitalist and free states, have embraced democratic socialism in whole or in part.
I would reserve my vote for Senator Sanders in the general election because he is too intransigent, unwilling to compromise, a requirement for being elected president in such a diverse country. The path to more economic and social justice takes more time and patience, not a revolution. Example: FDR, one of our great leaders, a disguised democratic socialist?
