France condemns Erdogan’s “provocative” remarks on Cyprus
France has accused Turkish President Recep Tayyip Erdogan of provocation after calling for a two-state solution for Cyprus during a visit to the northern part of the Turkish-occupied Mediterranean island.
France deeply regrets this unilateral step which was not coordinated and constitutes a provocation, declared the French Ministry of Foreign Affairs in a press release.
This jeopardizes the restoration of the confidence necessary for the urgent resumption of negotiations for a just and lasting settlement of the Cyprus issue, the statement continued.
On his island visit On Tuesday, Erdogan backed a two-state solution between the internationally recognized Greek Cypriot government in the south of the island and the Turkish-occupied north, in sharp divergence from international efforts to reunite the island into a bicommunal federation .
France will raise the issue at the UN
France currently chairs the United Nations Security Council and the Foreign Ministry said Paris would raise Erdogans’ comments during talks on Thursday.
France reaffirms its attachment to UN approved framework Security Council, based on a bi-zonal and bicommunity federation, offering the two communities all the guarantees of their political equality, the ministry said.
The island is currently divided into the Greek Cypriot island of Cyprus and the self-proclaimed Turkish Republic of Northern Cyprus, recognized only by Ankara.
Turkish forces seized the northern third of the island in 1974 in response to a failed coup in Nicosia attempting to reattach the country to Greece.
United Nations peacekeepers have been deployed in Cyprus since 1964.
