Relaunch the film industry
Prime Minister (PM) Imran Khan is interested in reviving the film industry of Pakistan and in particular in improving the soft power of Pakistan by reflecting the essence of Pakistanism, and by protecting and promoting culture and values of our society. Although the film is certainly a medium to be developed, restricting it solely to the reflection or strengthening of soft power will imply a change or a rigorous discussion of the values and culture of this society. This would involve a lot of effort to separate the parish from the state in order to show and promote a healthy culture in Pakistan as well as the deconstruction of social values which cause more damage instead of growth.
The first meeting of PM Khan was held with government officials on this subject, however, the second meeting on Saturday in Lahore will involve several stakeholders such as cinema owners, film producers, directors and the Secretary of Culture. This should allow the Prime Minister to better understand the functioning of the film industry, what are the challenges they face in the writing, production and promotion of their films. In all countries, films are representative of the creative minds that exist and should not be limited to one particular story, in order to create a space of diversity and multiculturalism.
The recent film “Zindagi Tamasha” by Sarmad Khoosat is a recent example of such restrictions. Based entirely on the trailer, the film was disparaged and labeled anti-state.
