Former AJK President Sardar Sikandar Hayat Khan has died

Sardar Sikandar Hayat Khan, former president and double prime minister of Azad Jammu and Kashmir, died on Saturday, his family confirmed on Saturday.

Khan was reportedly hospitalized and under treatment for heart disease. He has the distinction of having been named president of the AJK and of being also prime minister on two occasions.

Earlier this year, Khan, after more than a decade, had ended his association with the PML-N and joined the Muslim Conference (MC), according to Dawn.

Khan was among the pioneers of PML-N in Kashmir, the publication reported.

Expressing his sorrow, Prime Minister Imran Khan said: “Saddened to hear of the passing of Sardar Sikandar Hayat Khan, former AJK President as well as former AJK Prime Minister. “

“His contribution to the cause of Kashmir [and] the services rendered to the Kashmiri people were invaluable. My prayers [and] condolences to his family, ”he added.

In response to his death, Information and Broadcasting Minister Fawad Chaudhry expressed his grief, noting that Khan had raised his voice against Indian oppression in occupied Kashmir.

Khan was an upright and principled politician, the information minister added in a statement.

Recognizing the deceased’s efforts for AJK, National Assembly Speaker Asad Qaiser wrote on Twitter: “Sikandar Hayat Khan’s services will always be remembered. May Allah Almighty elevate the ranks of the deceased and grant patience to his family to endure this irreparable loss. “

The chairman of the parliamentary committee on Kashmir, Shehryar Afridi, also expressed his sorrow, saying he was “shocked to hear the news of the death of senior politician Sardar Sikandar Hayat Khan”.
