AMU sets up helpline for anti-CAA protesters

Aligarh, March 9 (IANS) The Student Coordination Committee of the Muslim University of Aligarh (AMU) has set up a “ legal helpdesk '' & amp; # 39; at the university's Bab-e-Syed monument to provide free legal aid to those who have been reserved. by the police while protesting the Citizenship Amendment Act (CAA).
The students said that since many protesters had been registered on false charges, it was necessary to provide them with legal assistance.
The student committee includes lawyers and teachers, mainly to help the reserved protesters.
Speaking to reporters, Imran Khan of the coordinating committee said that the "fascist" regime intended to demonize their peaceful anti-CAA protests and also target Muslim activists.
"The government wants to criminalize our dissent. The committee has therefore planned to set up a legal aid service to combat the witch hunt under the leadership of lead lawyer Asad Hayat," said Khan.
This office will be operational at the Bab-e-Syed protest site for three hours from 6 p.m. at 9 p.m. daily.
"The WBU Coordinating Committee is appealing to the citizens of Aligarh to contact us if they feel legal aid is needed. This help will be disinterested" said Khan, adding that brochures on the subject will be distributed throughout the city.
The committee members further stated: "We, the people of India, have the right to put our counter ideas against government policies that harm our culture and our ethos. It generally seems that the government of India targets a community during anti-CAA, NRC and the NPR movement. "
Meanwhile, the students also called on the state government to release forensic lawyer Mohammad Shoaib from "Rihai Manch".
Shoaib was arrested on December 19 and was later released on bail. He was arrested again on March 7.
Shoaib was arrested by police at his Lucknow home a day earlier.
