Government allocates 17 billion rupees for Galang Island water distribution system
Batam (ANTARA) – The government has allocated funding of 17 billion rupees to install a water distribution system on Galang Island in Batam, Riau Islands, which will be developed as a center of isolation and observation of infectious diseases.

Despite a water tank in the camp, its capacity was much less than 0.1 cubic meters per second, while the island's water demand is expected to reach 3.5 cubic meters per second.
"It is the nearest dam, with a capacity of 230,000 cubic meters. We will source five cubic meters per second," he said.
President Joko Widodo (Jokowi) had previously echoed the government's intention to revive health facilities on Galang Island, Batam, Riau Islands province, to serve as a hospital for the management of infectious diseases, including the new coronavirus (COVID-19).
"We already have the facility, but it hasn't been used for a long time. It will be renovated soon. So we will have Sebaru Kecil Island, Galang Island and also Natuna. We can choose one. The sighting wouldn't just focus on Sebaru Island, "said Jokowi.
During the period 1979-1997, Galang Island served as a camp for refugees from Vietnam. The island has various facilities – barracks, house of worship, hospital and school – and can accommodate 250,000 people.
Galang camp was closed in 1996, seven years after the adoption of the Comprehensive Plan of Action for Indo-Chinese refugees.
All Vietnamese refugees have been repatriated by UNHCR. The official transfer of the UNHCR camp to the Indonesian Industrial Development Authority of Batam took place in 1997.
