PTI spokespersons urged to highlight past bad behavior by the PMLN, with the Prime Minister pledging not to allow any attempt to pressure judges

Prime Minister Imran Khan on Monday called an alleged audio recording of former Pakistan Chief Justice Saqib Nisar an attack on the justice system and ordered Pakistani government spokesmen Tehreek-e-Insaf (PTI) to resist to all attempts to pressure the judges.

Former Gilgit-Baltistan Chief Justice Rana Shamin last week alleged that Nisar had given instructions to keep former Prime Minister Nawaz Sharif and PMLN Vice President Maryam Nawaz in prison until the elections General of 2018. The former chief justice denied, saying he did not have such a conversation with Shamim.

On Sunday, an audio clip featuring Nisar was leaked. A man presumed to be Nisar can be heard saying: Let me be a little blunt about this. Unfortunately, here it is the institutions that dictate the judgments. In this case, it will be necessary to penalize Mian Sahib [Nawaz Sharif]. And they say we’ll bring Khan Sahib. No matter the merit, we will have to do it, and even to his daughter [Maryam].

They [PMLN] are a mafia that pressures judges to make decisions in their favor, they will not be allowed to use such tactics, the prime minister told PTI spokespersons at their meeting. He urged them to highlight the PMLN’s past bad behavior with justice, saying the public should be informed that the party has attacked judges.

According to sources close to the meeting, Khan stressed that his government respects all institutions and will support them.

The issue of electronic voting machines was also raised during the meeting. Legislation allowing Pakistan’s Election Commission to conduct polls through the controversial devices was passed by a joint session of parliament last week. The Prime Minister reiterated that whatever the next general elections will be held via the EVMs and urged spokespersons to educate the nation on their value. Obstacles to voting by Pakistanis overseas should [also] be withdrawn, he reportedly said.

In this regard, Khan called on government officials to resolve the issues related to the Pakistani Overseas National Identity Card and the passports of Overseas Pakistanis. The government will keep its promise to Pakistanis overseas, he said.
