The story of two great leaders cut short
New lightning, on International Human Day, as Prime Minister Narendra Damodardas Modi announced his government’s decision to repeal the three most controversial agricultural laws following apologies taken the nation by surprise. Hours after the incredible U-turn, the two Telugu states suffered yet another shock in the form of Nara Chandrababu Naidu, Telugu Desam party chairperson and former chief minister, sobbing inconsolably as a result of humiliation. unbearable in the Assembly of Andhra Pradesh.
The two septuagenarian leaders, known for their political insight, their intransigence and their notoriety, made the news of the day. Modi’s flashback and Naidu’s collapse are indeed not characteristic of their characters.
The farming community, mainly from Punjab and Haryana, has risen up since the day (June 3, 2020) when the Union cabinet chaired by Modi made “historic decisions” and approved three Essential Commodities ordinances ( Amendment) Ordinance, 2020; Agricultural Trade and Trade (Promotion and Facilitation) Ordinance 2020; and the 2020 Agreement on Price Insurance and Agricultural Services for Farmers (Empowerment and Protection) without much ado.
As the three ordinances became law without much discussion, farmers took to the streets. They braved Covid-19, the state’s brutal tactics, and withstood bad weather at the nation’s borders for about a long year, forcing Modi to back down on Guru Nanak’s Prakash Utsav Day, celebrated to mark the birth of the first Sikh guru, Guru Nanak. The farmers’ struggle, described as independent India’s longest protest, has witnessed a series of unsavory incidents. to throw. Up to 700 restless farmers have reportedly died so far.
Debunking the government’s propaganda machine that only large farmers are behind the protests, a study by two economists associated with the University of the Punjab found that those who died during the protest had no more than 2.94 acres of cultivable land on average.
No one can say that every provision of the three laws is anti-farmer, but the way the government introduced them by sidestepping debate and discussion has sparked suspicion and outrage.
Political constraints ahead of Assembly elections in key states could be the reason for this sudden somersault, but the protracted struggle of farmers against all adversities remains an inspiration to those who have felt betrayed. by governments.
Our politicians are in too much of a hurry to get things done. They ignore processes and destroy systems to get things done to their advantage. They make mistakes and cover them up to save their skin. Politicians, forget leaders, apologizing for their past mistakes and misreading the situation are very rare. Completely blinded by power, the powers that be do not even care about people’s demand for their apologies. The course of correction, unfortunately, is a taboo in politics and administration today.
Modi, true to his political acumen, did not make his apologies very obvious in his speech for strategic reasons. Let us recall that the former Prime Minister Indira Gandhi had to apologize publicly for all the errors and excesses committed during the Emergency (June 25, 1975 to March 21, 1977).
Having badly burned her fingers as a result of the undemocratic ruling, addressing a large public meeting in Yavatmal (Maharashtra) on January 24, 1978, Indira said she took full responsibility for it. Bollywood stars, cricketers, intellectuals, who have supported farm laws only to please the Union government without some understanding of its provisions, should also publicly apologize.
Farmers have shown their disenchantment by not giving in to the Prime Minister’s announcement. In a sort of rebuke, the Samyukt Kisan Morcha, the umbrella body of the farmers’ unions, led by Rakesh Tikait of the Bharatiya Kisan Union, ignored the Prime Minister’s request to “go home to celebrate the festival and start over “.
Given Morcha’s list of demands, including the arrest of Union Minister Ajay Mishra’s son for mowing down four farmers with his car in Lakhimpur Kheri during a protest last month, apparently the problem is still current issue and it may take some time to find an amicable solution to the controversial issue. “Mafi mangne se bhala hone wala nahin hai … kisanon ka bhala MSP by kanoon banane se hoga” (Farmers will gain nothing by apologizing … they will only benefit by making a law on the MSP) , Tikait said.
You might be surprised to know that excuses don’t actually work. Richard Hanania of Columbia University conducted an experiment to understand the public response to executives’ apologies and found that apologizing after a blunder might not be the right way to go. He actually recognized the general perception that apologizing could make leaders seem weak, which in turn could make them less sympathetic. “The evidence suggests that when a prominent figure apologizes for a controversial statement, individuals are unaffected or become more likely to wish the individual to be punished,” the researcher said. Instead of making mistakes and apologizing, it is therefore wise to avoid them by trusting democracy and scrupulously adhering to democratic standards without fear or favor. There should be no room for hidden agendas or dark agreements.
Babu’s woes in AP
Back home, the public breaking of the TDP supremo during a press conference, broadcast live by a number of friendly news channels, also caused a sensation the same day. Disturbed by the grueling comments made by some ministers in the Assembly, the opposition leader organized an outing announcing that “I will come here as chief minister”, like the former CM of Tamil Nadu Jayalalithaa in 2012.
Naidu was particularly saddened by a request to discuss the birth of her son. It is very sad that the members of the ruling party used the meanest ways and the cheapest tricks to anger the Leader of the Opposition. The former CM’s claim that the ruling party launched very harsh and derogatory verbal attacks in the Assembly against his wife, Bhuvaneswari, was contested by Chief Minister Jagan Mohan Reddy.
It is disheartening to see one of the greatest leaders in national politics, Naidu, who ruled the state for 14 years, sobbing from a political attack by rivals. TDP founder NT Rama Rao was also heartbroken by how Naidu polarized his family members and party leaders by showing the former’s wife Lakshmi Parvathi as an alibi during the big political coup. from 1995.
Roja, a hot frontman and former film actress, has been humiliated under Naidu’s nose. TDP leaders, apparently at the behest of the leadership, made bad comments against family members of political opponents. Surprisingly, Naidu’s former disciples, belonging to his own community, harass him more severely than others.
Had he subdued the leaders with unethical practices and accorded due respect to women inside and outside the party, Babu would have gained more sympathy at this point. I was appalled to see Naidu, as CM in the Assembly, trying to find out how Modi can take care of the government when he did not take care of his wife.
The war of words in Andhra Pradesh is overflowing, and the unprintable coarse language used by some leaders to pin down opponents is sending the wrong signals. The AP CM hinted that he would follow Modi’s path to honor the farmers’ march against the idea of the three capitals on Monday morning, but that turned out to be false in the evening. We don’t know what’s in store for AP.
There is no doubt that Modi must have eaten crow due to his disregard for democratic discussions and his firm belief that brute force can work wonders. Likewise, Naidu pays for his own making.
The speech by Chief Justice of India NV Ramana at the 40th convocation of the Sri Sathya Sai Higher Education Institute, one day before the 96th anniversary of Satya Sai Baba’s birth, should serve as a lesson for Modis, Naidus, Jagans and all the other politicians in the country. CJI suggested that leaders review every day whether the decisions they make are good and also check if they have bad characteristics. In fact, every politician must introspect every day for a better society with a democratic spirit.
