Home Office criticized for flawed management of Windrush’s compensation program, with a damning report from the Home Affairs Select Committee suggesting the entire program should be taken out of the hands of Priti Patels and placed under oversight of an independent organization.

Members of the committee found that only 5.8% of victims had received payment four years after the scandal began, and only 20.1% of the 15,000 initially estimated eligible claimants had filed a claim.

Yvette Cooper, who chairs the Commons group, told BBC Radio 4s Today program today, there was a real fear that lack of confidence in the Home Minister’s department was the reason for such low attendance. Problems include applicants facing an intimidating application process, unreasonable demands for evidence and others left in limbo.

The attack on one of Boris Johnson’s top cabinet ministers comes amid ongoing speculation about his position as prime minister, as various reports last night suggested dozens of Tory MPs, including a whip, according to The telegraph submitted letters of no confidence to PM. Weeks of sordid allegations, government reversals and that Peppa Pig speech are blamed for Mr. Johnsons’ MPs losing faith in him.

Peppa Pig is not the basis of public policy making, says Labor MP

The Shadow Education Secretary ridiculed Boris Johnsons Peppa Pig’s speech this morning, saying she would never hit the cartoon, but didn’t think it should be associated with creating a policy public.

When asked by Sky News if she had ever been in the Peppa Pig world – the theme park Mr Johnson took a tangent in her CBI speech – Kate Green laughed and replied that she hadn’t. had not done.

Holding the prime minister accountable, she continued: I would never hit Peppa Pig, which brings great pleasure to many children in this country … but I don’t think Peppa Pig is the basis for making public policy though you are the prime minister.

Conservative MPs try to start leadership race without letters of confidence

Following my previous post (just after 8am), here is our political correspondent Jon stone With more information on the reports, Tory backbench MPs are trying to spark a leadership challenge against the prime minister.

Boris Johnson’s MP insisted the PM is in great shape despite reports that Tory MPs have written to their party asking for his replacement.

A dozen Tory MPs reportedly wrote to the chair of the Conservative backbench committee, with a senior MP saying The sun journal: There is real anger. He has until spring to get back on track or he will be in big trouble.

Meanwhile, the Conservative whips told the Telegraph there was a hypothesis that no letter of confidence had been written, while another suggested that the usual suspects were calling the prime minister to leave. It won’t reach the 50 letters you would need, but it does cause angst, the newspaper was told.

Stella Creasys shocks as she is told no babies are allowed in Commons

Labor MP Stella Creasy was told it was against the rules to bring a child to a debate at Westminster Hall, after wearing her three-month-old son in a sling as she spoke in Parliament on Tuesday.

The Walthamstow representative had previously taken her baby to the House of Commons without complaint, but after leading a debate on Tuesday afternoon on consumer credit programs to buy now, pay later, she was berated by the House authorities.

An email from the private secretary to the Ways and Means Committee chairman reportedly told Ms Creasy that bringing her baby to Parliament did not comply with the recently published rules of behavior and courtesy – the handbook for MPs .

Deputy Prime Minister defends bubbling leadership of his boss

No more Raab now, which appears on BBC Radio 4s Today program.

Grilled about the prime minister’s post, Mr Raab repeats much the same lines he gave to LBC and BBC Breakfast (see post below), but he appears to be more defensive about the suggestions than Boris Johnson doesn’t have what it takes.

Emphasizing the Britains Covid vaccination campaign and the fact that it has emerged from a terrible lockdown under the leadership of the Prime Minister, Raab suggests that Mr Johnson is a hot leader and that he is doing a good job.

He also claims that the British public, and more importantly voters, are not interested in hearsay about Prime Ministers’ state of mind – and rather care to see us solve the problems that matter. .

Finally, when asked about Peppa Pig’s speech, Mr Raab brings up the subject of the UK doing too much self-flogging and says we should be screaming about big UK exports like children’s cartoon.

Raab dismisses reports of mistrust of PM amid Westminster gossip

Deputy Prime Minister Dominic Raab appears to have denied suggestions that Conservative backbench MPs write to the 1922 committee chairman to demand a leadership challenge.

Speaking to LBC radio he said only the reports were the usual Westminster gossip and I didn’t know it.

Elsewhere, speaking to BBC Breakfast, he defended his boss as being in great shape.

The reality is people are talking about speeches in the village of Westminster, gossip and everything in between, Mr Raab said. It’s the job of Westminster commentators to pick up an anonymous source from wherever they find it to criticize the government of the day, that’s fine.

Asked how serious the Prime Minister is, the justice secretary said Mr Johnson was focused on the job at hand.

The Prime Minister is a bubbly, spirited, optimistic Tigger figure and he enlivens his speeches in a way few politicians past and present have done, Mr Raab told the BBC, before saying he supported glowing references to Peppa Pig.

PM in danger as a dozen Conservative MPs send letters of no confidence

After weeks of sordid accusations, U-turns and a rambling speech from Peppa Pig, a flurry of Tory MPs would have had enough and sent letters of defiance to Boris Johnson.

Downing Street on Tuesday dismissed concerns that the Prime Minister had lost his grip despite dozens of people in his own party, including a whip, writes The telegraph claiming that letters had been sent.

A senior Conservative MP would have said The sun: He’s like José Mourinho – he was good ten years ago and his powers have since faded.

Yes, he won an election, but a bowl of soup could have beaten Jeremy Corbyn.

There is real anger. He has until spring to get back on track or he will be in big trouble.

The letters have arrived. I myself am on the point.

Tory MPs can only trigger a leadership challenge, like the one thrown at ex-PM Theresa May, if 15% of them write letters to the 1922 committee chair, Sir Graham Brady, asking for one.

As there are currently 360 Conservative MPs in parliament, 54 of them should send such a letter.

The news comes after No.10 was forced to assure the British public on Tuesday that Mr Johnson is not ill, following concerns expressed after his speech to CBI leaders which was described as atrocious and a bad time for the Prime Minister, again by figures in the Conservative Party.

HO should be stripped of Windrush compensation responsibilities, MPs say

The Home Office should be relieved of its responsibility to compensate victims of the Windrush scandal, MPs from an influential parliamentary committee said.

A report by the House of Commons internal affairs select committee said the Priti Patels department had presided over a litany of loopholes and that an independent organization should take over, our political correspondent reports. Jon stone.

They found that by the end of September, only 20.1 percent of the initially estimated 15,000 eligible claimants had requested compensation, and only 5.8 percent had received payment. Meanwhile, they said the design of the compensation scheme contained the same bureaucratic insensitivities that led to the Windrush scandal in the first place.
