Fears Rishi Sunak “may step down as Sajid Javid” if PM sacks close advisor accused of causing damaging briefing as Chancellor’s allies “strike maelstrom of chaos” in # 10

  • Chancellor Rishi Sunak is said to be “frustrated” by Boris Johnson because of “chaos”
  • Allies said he believes the prime minister should show more professionalism
  • A source said Mr. Sunak was worried because he continues to be “affected”, but the chaos
  • After Prime Minister’s chaotic speech on Peppa Pig, failed rail ad and MPs rebellion

Fears were expressed today that Rishi Sunak could be forced out of government amid claims he is frustrated with the ‘maelstrom of chaos’ in No.10.

Allies have warned there could be a “repeat of Sajid’s situation” if the chancellor’s close aide, Liam Booth-Smith, is fired after being blamed by some for a vicious briefing.

Mr Sunak’s predecessor, Sajid Javid, resigned after being ordered to get rid of his advisers when Dominic Cummings was in Downing Street.

The Treasury has denied any involvement in the brutal internal feuds, which included an extraordinary claim that there was “a lot of concern in the building” about Boris Johnson after his bizarre rambling speech to the CBI.

But there were more signs of frustration from Mr. Sunak’s camp today, with an ally telling The Times he was “increasingly frustrated” by the unprofessional nature.

An anonymous government source told the newspaper that Mr. Sunak was worried because he “continues to be affected by the maelstrom of chaos nearby.”

Tory whips have pressured backbench MPs to fill the House of Commons with Prime Minister’s Questions and cheer on the Prime Minister as Sir Keir Starmer twisted the knife during a series of U-turns and incidents.

Mr Sunak showed unity, nodding his head as the prime minister defended his record.

The Chancellor’s appearance alongside Mr Johnson followed revelations in the Daily Mail yesterday that some senior government officials blame the Treasury for a toxic briefing against the Prime Minister earlier this week.

A “main source from Downing Street” told the BBC there was “a lot of concern inside the building about the Prime Minister” following a botched speech at the CBI on Monday in which Mr. Johnson lost his place for more than 20 seconds.

The briefing led to a hunt in Whitehall for the so-called ‘Chatty Pig’ in charge.

Several sources pointed the finger at Mr. Booth-Smith, head of Joint Economic Unit No. 10 / Treasury.

The request was strongly denied by the Treasury. A friend of Mr Booth-Smith said it was “not his style” to give damaging briefings.

An ally of Mr. Sunak told The Times: “Liam is a top notch person, he brings professionalism to everything he does. I hope we don’t get a repeat of Sajid’s situation.

Many in the government believe the real source for the briefing is based at No.10, which has also been plagued by internal struggles.

But the demand has sparked new tensions between the Chancellor and Mr Johnson, which have been simmering for weeks.

Yesterday, the prime minister’s press secretary sought to play down the row, telling reporters the two “worked well together”.

She added: “The Prime Minister and the Chancellor, as well as the whole government, are focused on achieving and achieving the priorities of the people.”

Tories’ unease over Mr Johnson’s Downing Street operation was heightened yesterday by a poll suggesting the Prime Minister’s approval rating has fallen to an all-time high.

The Savanta ComRes survey put Mr Johnson’s net approval rating at minus 14. It also gave Labor a narrow two-point lead.

However, Mr Johnson was still ranked as “best PM” at 39% well ahead of Sir Keir at 30%.

Senior Tories have dismissed reports that up to 14 MPs had submitted letters of no confidence in the Prime Minister to backbench shop steward Sir Graham Brady. A total of 54 letters are needed to trigger a leadership contest.

The PM took another heavy blow as a Savanta ComRes poll suggested chaos spilled over to voters, with his net favor score falling to minus 14 and Labor leading the overall standings.
