ANKARA (Sputnik) Turkish President Recep Tayyip Erdogan has announced that prayer to commemorate the 567th anniversary of the fall of Constantinople (currently Istanbul) will take place in Hagia Sophia this Friday.
Last year, Erdogan suggested that Hagia Sophia (formerly the Church of the Holy Wisdom), which was once a Christian Orthodox cathedral before becoming a mosque and then a museum, could again become a mosque with free entry.

In 1261, the Byzantine Empire took over the city and the Church of the Holy Wisdom again became the main Orthodox cathedral.
Ottoman troops led by Sultan Mehmet II captured Constantinople on May 29, 1453, and after that the cathedral became a mosque. In 1934, then the Turkish leader Mustafa Kemal Ataturk published a decree, which transformed Hagia Sophia into a museum.
