What's going on: growing disruption, plummeting markets
ROME Growing disruption from the new coronavirus is resulting in new travel restrictions and increased economic concerns. A majority of the global cases of the disease are considered cured, but the continued spread of the virus leads to case peaks in some places.
Here are some of the latest developments on Monday:
TRADING HALTED
World stock oil markets and prices plunge, reflecting the growing alarm over closed factories, unprecedented travel bans and quarantines. An alarming fall on Wall Street triggered the first automatic shutdown in more than two decades. European markets have entered a bear market, posting their heaviest losses since the darkest days of the 2008 crisis. Oil prices have suffered their worst losses since the start of the 1991 Gulf War.
CRUISE SHIP
A cruise ship with at least 21 infected people on board was finally cleared to dock in California. The U.S. State Department has advised against taking cruises at this time. In Detroit, residents whose water was closed due to unpaid bills could have it restored so they can wash their hands as part of a plan to prevent the spread of new infections. In total, the United States had about 600 confirmed cases on Monday.
DIVIDED DINNERS, SPECIAL ELEVATORS
