REVIEW: Boris Johnson's Last Temptation in Eastbourne
If the Prime Minister does not wash his hands for the cameras, he visits the communities affected by the floods or smiles alongside his future girlfriend.
Now however, Boris is walking on the boards of Devonshire Park or rather Will Barton is in this week the theatrical offer of The Last Temptation by Boris Johnson.
The hit comedy, which sold its London tour, tells the story of the dinner that actually took place and changed the story when, in February 2016, Bo Jo decided to vote Leave.
Guests include MP Michael Gove, wife and journalist Sarah Vine, Boriss, then partner Marina Wheeler and Russian businessman Evgeny Lebedev, but quizzotic madness brings the spirit of the first to life ministers, including Margaret Thatcher, Winston Churchill and Tony Blair.
The first half is entirely devoted to Boriss' decision-making and the brilliant Will Barton really has the essence of man, his boastfulness and his boastful appearance.
The second half is advancing rapidly towards post-Brexit Britain 2029 and Boris is no longer in power, but as he travels the political wilderness, unexpected events come back into the spotlight and with a chance of leave Brenter and make Britain great again while Gove joins the clergy.
Bill Champion is as big as the treacherous Gove, also playing Winston Churchill and, in later scenes, Agent Boriss. Claire Lichie is also wonderful as she flies between the long suffering of Marina Wheeler and the PMs who press Caitlin with hilarious liners.
My favorite character was the representation of Emma Davies by Margaret Thatcher, with immaculate hair, a blue suit and a handbag. Emma also plays the role of Sarah Vine.
The final actor in this mocking production is Tim Wallers, who plays the Russian businessman as well as Huw Edwards and an incredibly realistic Tony Blair.
The play is evolving rapidly and it is obvious that the script imagined by Jonathan Maitland is updated as there have been references to the coronavirus since the play left its London scene.
There's also a bit of effect and jeffing that doesn't feel out of place as it sometimes does with the distinguished audience of Eastbourne because of the subject.
The performances are funny, refined and the show lasts two hours and 10 minutes, which includes a short delay / interval of 20 minutes sanctioned by the EU.
The show runs until Saturday March 14 and ticket prices start at 7pm at the Eastbourne 412000 box office.
