Pakistan will not abandon Afghans in times of need, says PM Imran Khan

ISLAMABAD: Pakistan, while expressing concern over the deteriorating humanitarian situation in Afghanistan, has again vowed not to abandon Afghans in this time of need.

The resolution was expressed at the third meeting of the Supreme Committee on Afghanistan, chaired by Prime Minister Imran Khan in Islamabad.

The committee renewed its appeal to the international community and relief agencies to provide assistance at this critical time to avert economic collapse and save precious lives in Afghanistan.

The prime minister ordered relevant authorities to explore bilateral cooperation with friendly countries to avert the humanitarian crisis in Afghanistan.

He also ordered to expand cooperation in railways, minerals, pharmaceuticals and media to help Afghanistan’s rehabilitation and development.

The supreme committee was informed that Afghanistan was on the brink of hunger and a crisis situation during this harsh winter, which made it difficult for people to get enough food and shelter.

Earlier, the supreme committee was briefed on the progress made in in-kind humanitarian aid worth Rs 5 billion, which included food items including 50,000 tons of wheat, emergency medical supplies, winter shelters and other supplies.

The meeting was attended by Foreign Minister Makhdoom Shah Mehmood Qureshi, Information Minister Fawad Chaudhry, Interior Minister Sheikh Rashid Ahmed, Trade Advisor Abdul Razzak Dawood, National Security Advisor Dr. Moeed Yousaf, Chief of Army Staff (COAS) General Qamar Javed Bajwa and senior civilian and military officers.
