Boris Johnson ignores SNP call to turn 200 energy loans into grant in face of massive price hike
Boris Johnson has been challenged to put money in people’s pockets by turning the £200 consumer energy loan into a grant.
Ian Blackford, the leader of SNP Westminster, has called on the Prime Minister and Chancellor to help those facing a 700 price hike on Friday when the energy price cap is lifted.
At First Ministers’ Questions in the Commons, Blackford said the Chancellors’ spring statement had failed to touch the sides of the cost of living crisis facing millions.
He said: Last week the Chancellor got the Spring Statement seriously wrong and since then the Prime Minister has been busy briefing him, saying he needs to do more.
Blackford said the Prime Minister was dangerously out of touch and accused Boris Johnson’s government of partying during the cost of living emergency.
He said: Some Tory cabinet members clearly believe that better weather means they can sit back and do nothing until next winter.
They obviously don’t understand or care that in many parts of Scotland the weather will barely reach freezing point next week.
Blackford added: The Chancellor thinks his £200 loan, which puts people into energy debt, is something of a solution. This is clearly not the case.
So before the Prime Minister and Chancellor go on Easter vacation, will they at least turn this loan into a grant and finally put some money in people’s pockets?
Johnson responded with insults about Blackford’s weight and calling the SNP a Scottish nationalist party.
He said that when it comes to energy, the SNP is opposed to the use of any of our indigenous hydrocarbons, which results in Europeans importing oil and gas from Putin Russia.
Johnson added: What is actually happening is the living wage is rising again at a record high and thanks to what the Chancellor has done we are spending £9.1billion helping people across the country.
“What I might respectfully suggest is that the Scottish National Government should focus on Scotland’s long-term prosperity and on the education system, where I am sad to see once-glorious Scotland falling behind.
