Drama on the high seas: Greek helicopter confronts Turkish freighter | archives, greece, news

ATHENS – Adding to fears of a conflict with mounting tensions over who has the right to the seas, a Greek navy helicopter attempted to stop and inspect a freighter accompanied by Turkish frigates in the eastern Mediterranean, but is left after a Turkish military warning.

A Turkish official, speaking on condition of anonymity, told London-based online media Middle East Eye that the incident was not near and did not endanger any life, and the Greek navy did not respond.

“The Greek ships left as soon as they saw the Turkish frigates,” said the official. “They were miles away anyway.”

CNN Greece, which first reported the incident, said the frigate Spetsai had approached Cirkin under the Tanzanian flag, suspected of transporting arms to Libya, where Turkey supports a government recognized by the United Nations, but Greece supports the rebels.

Greece has denounced an agreement that Turkey has signed with Libya dividing the seas between them, claiming the waters off the Greek islands and with Turkish President Recep Tayyip Erdogan saying that Turkey will drill energy off the Crete.

The report indicates that a nearby Greek ship was under the command of the European operation IRINI, which was set up by the European Union in February to stop imports of arms to Libya in accordance with the embargo on the arms of the United Nations.

“The Italian commander of the European forces ordered the commander of the Greek frigate to take off (sic) from a helicopter and control the ship,” the report said, adding that the ship was near the southwest coast of the Crete.

“As soon as the Greek helicopter approached Cirkin, it received a call from a Turkish frigate which sent the message that” the Turkish ship is under the protection of the Turkish Republic “,” added the report.

After the radio message, the Italian commander ordered the Greek helicopter to return because IRINI is not authorized to intervene with ships accompanied by ships belonging to third countries, according to the report.

Despite the UN arms embargo, Turkey signed a military cooperation agreement with Libya and sent drones, armored vehicles, Syrian mercenaries and military officers to support the government against the forces of the Commander of the East, Khalifa Haftar.

This has put the UN in a delicate position to support the government in Libya but to oppose the shipment of weapons there.
