Refugees for nothing | Farouk Youssef

Turkish President Recep Tayyip Erdogan has promised to welcome more Syrian refugees to his country. Other Syrian refugees are expected to be on the way.

The flow of Arab asylum seekers will not stop. There are always new episodes of this phenomenon which testify to the human pain in the Arab world.

Many Arabs believe that asylum has become the golden solution. It has become a profession that one can practice without being forced to do so.

It is a flight from an original homeland to a homeland that will always remain virtual, a homeland of convenience. It is essential.

The generations born in the diaspora are lost generations, which will remain lost because they have no real roots in an adopted land that embraced and nurtured them.

Arabs seem ill-qualified to do anything other than leave their homeland for temporary places of residence. No matter how long they stay there, these places will not be their homes.

All of this has become a permanent trend. Individuals prefer to emigrate from a society deprived of its will. Personal initiatives have produced a mass exodus in which societies change their customs and abandon their history.

Where will all this play with the destinies of peoples lead?

Not everyone who arrived in countries of asylum desperately needed to flee. Those who deserve to be protected have not arrived. This can be concluded by impartially examining the files of refugees who have come to Europe from various countries with a Syrian identity. This is what the Iraqis have done in the past and what the Kurds have done so far.

Isn’t it ironic that over a million Syrian, Iraqi and Iranian Kurds have been granted asylum on the grounds that they are survivors of the chemical attacks in Halabja, Iraq?

This trend has prompted humanitarian organizations to demand that countries abandon asylum laws. He encouraged right-wing parties in Europe to include the expulsion of Muslim refugees in their election platforms.

For various purposes of dubious expediency, Western political factions encouraged an increase in refugees from certain countries. This is what happened with Iraq under Saddam Hussein. The goal was to be able to say that a regime that expels four million of its citizens does not deserve to exist. Rather, it must be attacked and knocked down. This happened with Syria before the war started, as camps were set up in Jordan and Turkey. The Syrians believed that staying there would only be a prelude to a move to Europe. What these Syrians believed at the time did not correspond to reality.

The population counter has stopped at ten million. The Syrians were mired in their attempts to follow in the footsteps of their compatriots, while the Iraqis were desperate to cross the border from Belarus into Western Europe. Those who survived came back with horrific stories, but no one could blame them for doing what they did. If given a choice between staying home and resuming the adventure, a Survivor would choose to try again.

Nobody knew the meaning of being a refugee for life. Indeed, refugee children and grandchildren will always be refugees. It is a legacy that cannot be underestimated on a human level. The catastrophe is greater when the countries from which the refugees flee do not care about the fate of their own citizens. An Arab leader recently said bluntly: Whoever doesn’t like it here, he can go there, as if the homeland was a personal home bequeathed to these leaders by their parents; as if it were personal property that no one could dispute.

The notion of a refugee from a rich country is more difficult to accept by any host country. It will always be said that Somalis were born in a poor country, while Iraqis will always be considered the sons of a rich nation. Doubts will pursue them. Their ordeal will not be over, even though many of them live the life of wealthy immigrants. But who needs a refugee’s identity?

Erdogan knows that asylum has become a profitable game. Years ago, he received three billion euros in bribes from the European Union in order to stop the waves of Syrian refugees. When German Chancellor Merkel announced she was ready to welcome one million Syrian refugees, it encouraged citizens to abandon their homes.

Refugees for nothing. That’s wrong. Every refugee is a number in an international equation, after which homelands are erased, so that we all become homeless.
