JAKARTA: Indonesian President Joko Widodo’s approval ratings hit their lowest level in six years amid dissatisfaction with soaring cooking oil prices and the perceived failure of a food ban export to rapidly reduce the rising cost of goods, according to a new survey released on Sunday (May 15th).

Figures from pollster Indikator Politik Indonesia showed that satisfaction with the country’s president, widely known as Jokowi, fell to 58.1% in May.

The numbers are the lowest mark since December 2015, when the president’s approval dropped to 53%.

The drop, which follows a 12-point drop from January to April this year, comes as Southeast Asia’s biggest economy has struggled to reign in domestic cooking oil prices. , a household staple in Indonesia, and after a shock decision to ban palm oil exports late last month.

Indonesia is the world’s largest producer of palm oil and the policy decision has stunned global markets.

At the time, President Jokowi said the need for affordable food outweighed income concerns and the ban would be lifted once national needs were met.

Conducted from May 5 to 10, the Indikator survey indicated that the decline in Jokowi’s approval was largely linked to the rising cost of cooking oil and the inflationary effect, and the gap between the political expectations and the realities on the ground after the export ban. did not see prices drop significantly after the ruling.

The poll, which surveyed 1,200 people, found that while almost 90% supported the export ban, more than 72% said cooking oil prices remained less affordable, or not affordable at all. .

The presidential palace was not immediately available for comment.

Chief Economy Minister Airlangga Hartarto said the export ban would remain in place until bulk cooking oil prices fall to Rs 14,000 per liter nationwide .

Last Thursday, Ministry of Commerce data showed bulk cooking oil being sold at Rs 16,600 per litre.
