Boris Johnson latest: Prime Minister urged to publish Lord Geidts’ resignation letter

A human rights expert explains what stopped the first Rwandan flight

Boris Johnson is facing calls to release Lord Christopher Geidt’s full resignation letter after the ethics chief left his post.

The UK government has so far released only a short statement from the adviser, who said he was stepping down with regret but felt it was the right thing to do.

A former incumbent and Labor MPs have urged the Prime Minister to make the resignation letter public.

Earlier this week, Lord Geidt told MPs it was reasonable to suggest the Prime Minister broke cabinet code by breaching lockdown laws in the Partygate scandal.

He also said he was frustrated with Mr Johnson’s response to Sue Gray’s report on parties at No 10 during the Covid restrictions.

Resignation is one of the rather blunt but rare tools available to the adviser, he also told the Commons committee.

A No 10 source told the AP News Agency that Mr Johnson was surprised by Lord Geidt’s departure announced on Wednesday.

We had a rough time, says Raab

Dominic Raab was also asked about the two ethics advisers who follow each other in quick succession and whether that reflects poorly on Boris Johnson.

We had a difficult period, but we continue to work, he said.

Second ethics counselor to leave this month

Lord Geidt’s resignation comes just a week after the Prime Minister’s anti-corruption czar quit his post.

John Penrose said it was pretty clear Boris Johnson broke cabinet code over the Partygate scandal when he left.

Boris Johnson’s anti-corruption czar resigns ahead of vote of no confidence

Boris Johnson’s anti-corruption czar has resigned from his post, saying it’s pretty clear the PM broke cabinet code over the Partygate scandal. no confidence in his leadership. It is quite clear that he breached the ministerial code in a very material way and I fear it would normally be a matter of resignation for the minister concerned, Mr Penrose said. Obviously, as an anti-corruption czar, I cannot carry in this role. Click here to subscribe to our newsletters.

Raab insists government operates ethically’

Dominic Raab insisted the UK government acts ethically 100% of the time in his Sky News interview.

He continued to use the vaccine rollout and restarting the economy as examples.

Raab says there will be a No 10 update later on Lord Geidt’s resignation

Dominic Raab, the Deputy Prime Minister, was asked on Sky News about the resignation of a second ministerial interests adviser.

First, he was engaged to the Prime Minister in Issue 10 this week and discussed staying for six months. I had understood that he had committed to the role, he said.

I think he’s been pretty roughed up by MPs this week, I think sometimes in the media and as politicians we maybe underestimate how public servants feel about this kind of scrutiny.

And third, there was a particular issue, a commercially sensitive issue in the national interest, that he was asked to consider.

Mr Raab added: I don’t know what aspect of this – there will be an update to issue 10 later.

ICYMI: UK rescued 444 Channel crossing migrants as Rwanda deportation flight canceled

More than 440 people were found trying to cross the English Channel on the same day as the first planned deportation flight from the UK to Rwanda.

This is the highest number of attempts on the same day in two months.

It came as the UK tried to start deporting asylum seekers arriving in the UK via unofficial routes – such as on small boats across the English Channel – to Rwanda.
