Boris Johnson’s ethics adviser resignation letter published

Boris Johnson’s ethics adviser has resigned suddenly because he was put in ‘an odious position’ when asked to consider action that could deliberately and deliberately breach the ministerial code.

Details of Lord Geidt’s shock resignation as Boris Johnson’s ethics adviser were set out in a letter he sent to the Prime Minister.

In the explosive resignation letter, Lord Geidt accuses the Prime Minister of putting him in an “impossible and odious” position and adds: “I cannot participate in it”.

Lord Geidt dramatically resigned on Wednesday just days after saying it was reasonable to suggest the Prime Minister broke the ministerial code on anti-coronavirus parties at No 10.

In his letter to the Prime Minister, Geidt explained how he had managed to ‘credibly continue’ as an ethics counsellor, if only ‘by a very small margin’, after the partygate scandals and the fine imposed on the Prime Minister for breaking the lockdown rules.

However, the straw that broke the camel’s back appears to have been the consideration of a policy proposal that Geidt considers a “deliberate violation” of the ministerial code.

In a scathing review of Johnson, Geidt wrote: “The idea that a prime minister could in any degree be deliberately breaking his own code is an affront.”

“A willful violation, or even an intention to do so, would be to suspend the provisions of the code to serve a political end. It would flout not only compliance with the code, but also allow the suspension of its provisions governing the conduct of ministers of His Majesty I can have no part in this.

In his response, the Prime Minister wrote that he had sought advice on protecting a crucial industry that receives state support in other countries.

Johnson wrote that the resignation came as a surprise after the ethics counselor said he had been placed in an impossible position over advice relating to the Trade Remedies Authority.

Last year, the independent Trade Remedies Authority recommended that the UK remove a number of safeguard duties on Chinese steel.

But there was skepticism in Westminster that steel tariffs were the issue that ultimately prompted Geidt to step down as scandal-ridden Boris Johnson’s ethics adviser.

Lord Geidt became the second ministerial interests adviser to step down in the prime ministers’ three-year tenure when a brief statement was released on Wednesday evening.

With regret, I feel it is right that I step down as independent adviser on ministers’ interests, the message on the government’s website reads.

Downing Street issued a statement this week referring to Lord Geidt advising on a commercially sensitive issue in the national interest, but did not give further details at the time.
