China Warns United States Against Sanctions Against Hong Kong Security Law

Beijing / Hong Kong June 30 (PTI) China warned the United States on Tuesday against sanctions against Hong Kong’s new security law, saying Beijing is ready with its own necessary countermeasures.
Chinese President Xi Jinping on Tuesday signed a controversial security law that granted Beijing new powers over Hong Kong that are tailor-made to combat dissent, criminalizing sedition and effectively reducing protests amid anger and global outrage in the former British colony.
Xi signed the legislation shortly after Chinese lawmakers voted unanimously to adopt the People’s Republic of China’s Law for Safeguarding National Security in the Hong Kong Special Administrative Region (HKSAR).
The law – facilitating the presence of Chinese security offices in Hong Kong, in addition to prohibiting secession, subversion, terrorism and collusion with foreign forces to endanger national security – was adopted by the Standing committee of 162 members of the Chinese legislature, the National People’s Congress (NPC).
In a statement, US Secretary of State Mike Pompeo said that, with a view to Beijing’s implementation of the national security law, Washington will stop exporting American-made defense equipment and take measures to impose the same restrictions on US defense and dual-use technologies.
