Guwahati: The eastern state of Assam is reeling from a devastating flood with 54.50 lakh people affected and over 100 people losing their lives so far this year. According to the Assam State Disaster Management Authority, seven people have lost their lives in the past 24 hours (Thursday June 23). So far, 107 people have lost their lives (90 in floods and 17 in landslides).

The floods have caused widespread loss of life and property and the displacement of millions of people over the past week. Addressing the situation, Prime Minister Narendra Modi said the central government is closely monitoring the situation. “Over the past few days, parts of Assam have been flooded due to heavy rains. The central government is continuously monitoring the situation in Assam and working closely with the state government to provide all the possible help to overcome this challenge.”

Modi added, “Army and NDRF teams are present in the flood affected areas. They conduct evacuation operations and assist those affected. The Air Force conducted more than 250 sorties as part of the evacuation process.

Meanwhile, Tibetan spiritual leader Dalai Lama donated Rs 10 lakh to support the flood relief work in Assam and expressed his sorrow at the hardship caused to people due to the calamity. In a letter to Chief Minister Himanta Biswa Sarma, he said he appreciates that the relevant agencies are doing everything to rescue the affected people and bring relief to them. “As a sign of solidarity with the people of Assam, I am donating Rs 10,000,000 from the Dalai Lama’s Gaden Phodrang Trust to support these agencies,” the letter read.

Around 17,500 people have been rescued so far in flood-affected areas of Assam, the NDRF said on Thursday. Of those, 900 were rescued on Thursday, a National Disaster Response Force spokesman said in an update released at 5 p.m. The official said that a total of 26 NDRF teams are operating in 14 flood-affected districts in the state and they are working in coordination with state authorities.

View photos The advantages of comparing online car insurance quotes are the following: Online quotes can be obtained from anywhere and at any time. Unlike physical insurance agencies, websites don't have a specific schedule and they are available at any time. Drivers that have busy working schedules, can compare quotes from anywhere and at any time, even at midnight. Multiple choices. Almost all insurance providers, no matter if they are well-known brands or just local insurers, have an online presence. Online quotes will allow policyholders the chance to discover multiple insurance companies and check their prices. Drivers are no longer required to get quotes from just a few known insurance companies. Also, local and regional insurers can provide lower insurance rates for the same services. Accurate insurance estimates. Online quotes can only be accurate if the customers provide accurate and real info about their car models and driving history. Lying about past driving incidents can make the price estimates to be lower, but when dealing with an insurance company lying to them is useless. Usually, insurance companies will do research about a potential customer before granting him coverage. Online quotes can be sorted easily. Although drivers are recommended to not choose a policy just based on its price, drivers can easily sort quotes by insurance price. Using brokerage websites will allow drivers to get quotes from multiple insurers, thus making the comparison faster and easier.
