Imran Khan says India is behind

The Baluch Liberation Army (BLA), a group of separatist insurgents from Pakistan’s southwestern Balochistan province, claimed responsibility for the attack in a message on Twitter.

Khan said Pakistani intelligence has successfully prevented at least four major attacks in the country, including two against Islamabad, but said it was not possible to end all of these attacks.

The gunmen were carrying a heavy supply of arms and equipment, and security officials believed they intended to storm the stock exchange building and take hostages.

Khan called their failure and the rapid response of the security forces “a great victory.”

Separatists have been fighting for years in Balochistan, complaining that its mineral wealth is unfairly exploited by the wealthier and more powerful provinces of Pakistan. Balochistan is the site of several projects related to the Chinese Belt and Road initiative.

Pakistan has regularly accused India of supporting the Baluch separatists – an accusation that Delhi has repeatedly denied.

The BLA also took responsibility for an attack on the Chinese consulate in Karachi in 2018.
