Jokowi urges Putin and Zelensky to make room for dialogue
JAKARTA (Reuters) – Indonesian President Joko Widodo said on Sunday he would urge his Russian and Ukrainian counterparts to open space for dialogue during a peacebuilding mission to the warring countries and would ask Russia’s Vladimir Putin to order an immediate ceasefire.
“War must be stopped and global food supply chains must be reactivated,” Jokowi, as the president is popularly known, said before departing for Germany to attend the Group of Seven summit on Monday.
The president also said he would encourage the G-7 countries to seek peace in Ukraine after the Russian invasion and to find an immediate solution to the global food and energy crises. Russia calls its actions in Ukraine a “special operation”.
Separately, Indonesian Foreign Minister Retno Marsudi said food and fertilizers from Russia and Ukraine should be “reintegrated into the global market, despite the war”.
“There is a need to secure a grain corridor from Ukraine and open food and fertilizer exports from Russia. All countries must refrain from actions that further exacerbate this food crisis,” Marsudi said. in a statement on Sunday.
Indonesia condemned the war and expressed its sympathy to the Ukrainians. However, Jokowi said in April that he had refused a request for arms from Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskyy.
