Chris Pincher news – live: Boris Johnson must reveal who knew what about MP

Russian state TV presenter says Boris Johnson is ‘chubby’

Boris Johnson must reveal exactly who knew what and when about the allegations against suspended MP Chris Pincher, the Labor Party has said.

Tamworth MP Mr Pincher resigned as Deputy Chief Whip on Thursday after being accused of groping two men while intoxicated at a private Tory club in London the night before.

He was suspended from the party on Friday.

The Prime Minister is under pressure to explain why he appointed Mr Pincher to the post despite stepping down following a similar allegation, which he denies, in 2017.

We want to know who knew what and when and why these decisions were made the way they were, Baroness Jenny Chapman told BBC Breakfast on Monday morning.

I don’t think anyone in Westminster thinks Boris Johnson was unaware of the allegations about Mr Pincher, she added.

Elsewhere, Mr Johnson and Chancellor Rishi Sunak have pledged what they call the biggest tax cut in a decade of up to £6billion to tackle the cost of living crisis.

No one deserves special treatment, says ex-minister

Former cabinet minister Liam Fox has said ‘no one deserves special treatment’ or being ‘pilloried’ for being a friend of the Prime Minister, after reports surfaced whether Boris Johnson was aware of allegations against Chris Pincher of inappropriate sexual behavior prior to appointing him Deputy Chief Whip.

Asked about Mr Pinchers’ appointment, the former Defense Secretary told Times Radio: ‘Well over the weekend I saw a lot of hearsay – sources close to someone close said – you know, I think we need to be above the chatter and gossip in Westminster.

“All I would say is nobody deserves special treatment because they are a friend of the Prime Minister and nobody deserves pillorying just because they are a friend of the Prime Minister. We we can’t make our proxy politics work that way.”

Starmer will keep promise to quit if fined for Partygate, says Labor leader

Labor counterpart Baroness Jenny Chapman, shadow minister of state in the Cabinet Office, said Keir Starmer was keeping his promise to step down as Labor leader if fined by police.

There are reports that Durham Police’s decision on whether to amend Starmer for the Beergate saga could come as soon as today, although Labor sources have told The Independent they don’t know when. the announcement could take place.

Asked if Labor might seek a new leader this week, Baroness Chapman told Sky News: I don’t think so. We have to wait and see what the Durham Police say.

There are also reports that Labour’s National Executive Committee (NEC) may refuse to accept Starmers’ resignation.

Asked if her resignation could be refused, Baroness Chapman said: I think Keir has been very clear about his point of view. What the NEC would do if it was clearly within the NEC.

Minister did not ask No 10 about Cummings claims before broadcast

Will Quince admitted that before appearing in the media on Monday morning he had not asked Downing Street about Dominic Cummings’ allegations that Boris Johnson called Chris Pincher ‘Pincher by name, pincher by nature’.

The former No 10 adviser alleged that the Prime Minister had referred to the MP in this way long before appointing him in February.

The Children’s Minister also denied on ITV’s Good Morning Britain that Downing Street’s handling of the allegations sends the wrong message to young people under his portfolio.

He said any type of unacceptable behavior should be reported to the police and all relevant authorities.

Quince denies junior ministers were deployed to defend PM

Will Quince also denied reports that junior ministers would be sent on air to defend the Prime Minister in the face of controversy, instead of reluctant Cabinet ministers.

He said: I’m certainly not going to defend the former deputy chief whip.

The allegations are incredibly serious and I am appalled by them. But it’s not today, because I was booked four days ago, actually five days ago, I think it was, to talk about a custody announcement very important children.

He said the allegations were indefensible.

When asked if the allegations against Chris Pincher were serious enough for the police to get involved if an incident was brought to their attention, Will Quince replied: I think that’s the police business.

I think the key thing is that we create an environment where everyone feels that if they witness or are the victim of sexual assault or predatory behavior of that nature in relation to these allegations, that ‘He feels able to go to the police and the authorities because that’s exactly how investigations can follow and due process takes its course.

The deputy minister also declined to say whether his party colleague should step down from his seat if the allegations against him are proven.

He said: This is a matter for Parliament and we have clear processes and procedures in place regarding the recall.

‘You can’t act on the rumor

Deputy Minister Will Quince was asked about Sky News why the Prime Minister gave former Deputy Chief Whip Chris Pincher a job.

The Tory MP insisted Boris Johnson was not aware of any specific allegations against Mr Pincher and said he had spoken to No 10 to seek assurances about it.

I was categorically assured that the Prime Minister was not aware of any serious specific allegations relating to the former Deputy Chief Whip, he said.

He continued: I think these cases are difficult because, like any professional organization, you cannot act on rumor or gossip. As you know, in Westminster there is a lot of rumor or gossip.

That is why it is also so important that when people witness something that is clearly appalling, well below the standard behavior that we should rightly expect from parliamentarians and those working in the field parliamentary that has been reported, and we encourage everyone to come forward and whether it is the police or the parliamentary authorities, so action can be taken as in this case.

Labour: Tory response to Brexit woes irresponsible

Baroness Jenny Chapman has denied that Labor intends to defeat Brexit.

Labor leader Sir Keir Starmer will later today pledge not to bring the UK back into the single market or restore freedom of movement as he outlines his plan to make Brexit work.

He will use a speech to say that a government under his leadership would not join a customs union with the EU, keeping the difficult Brexit deal brokered by Boris Johnson.

I think that would be the last thing the country wants to see, the Labor politician told the BBC. Breakfast. We’ve had so many splits since 2016. I think the last thing Keir Starmer definitely wants to do is revisit all of this.

But we think the Conservatives, because they have this way of solving problems, which is if we have to create a struggle to get some political support within our party, well, do- the.

They’re taking that approach to issues like Northern Ireland and we think that’s irresponsible, and we want to see those issues resolved.
