More than half of Tory members think MPs were wrong to force Boris Johnson out of office

More than half of Tory members believe MPs were wrong to force Boris Johnson out of power and that the scandal-ridden leader would win re-election and remain Prime Minister if he was on the ballot

  • 40% of those polled said they would vote for the current PM if they could
  • Some 53% said MPs were wrong to force him out of power in the first place
  • Those MPs included leadership candidate Rishi Sunak, who quit as Chancellor

Boris Johnson would remain at No 10 as Prime Minister if allowed to run again as Tory leader, according to a new poll today.

Tory members have lambasted party MPs who forced Mr Johnson to announce he was stepping down last month, a sign of the divisive nature of his leadership.

Some 53% of people polled by YouGov for The Times said the more than 60 ministers who resigned to overthrow an administration crippled by foolishness were wrong to act.

Those MPs included leadership candidate Rishi Sunak, who stepped down as chancellor, but not Liz Truss, who remains foreign minister.

However, the poll also suggested that Mr Johnson would beat them both if allowed to stand.

Some 40% of those polled said they would support the current prime minister if the party changed its rules to allow him to defend his position.

A grassroots campaign by some of Mr Johnson’s closest allies has pushed for it to happen, but there are no plans to change the rules.

Threats of protests and pickets in the 12 leadership roundups across the country, made by Tory millionaire donor Lord Cruddas, have yet to materialize.

As Ms Truss and Mr Sunak prepare for the third election campaign in Cardiff tonight, Mr Johnson is due to leave for a short holiday.

Last weekend, he used a speech at his lavish weekend wedding celebration to claim he was the victim of ‘the greatest couture since the Bayeux Tapestry’.

He made the remarks as he and Carrie gathered with their closest friends and family at the country estate of a Tory billionaire donor to celebrate their lockdown wedding.

In an address to guests including his Cabinet supporters and celebrities including soap star and singer Holly Vallance, he suggested he did not deserve to be ousted from power.

And this despite the catalog of economic squalor and woe that led to the departure of more than 50 ministers last month, including Partygate and Wallpapergate.

According to the Times, he joked that he had received “heaps of letters to resign, mostly from my closest family”, but had become “aware of the cloud on the horizon”.

He then compared the massive walkout that prompted his own reluctant resignation to the famous 70m (230ft) work of art housed in Normandy but made in England.

Liz Truss and Rishi Sunak will take on the Tory stalwarts tonight amid strong signs the party has already decided who it wants to be its next leader and prime minister.

Ms Truss, the Foreign Secretary, opened up an astonishing 34-point lead in the latest opinion poll of Tory members who make up the electorate, suggesting Mr Sunak has a mountain to climb.

YouGov’s investigation for The Times is also pouring cold water on the former chancellor’s hopes of changing his mind as he prepares for tonight’s third election campaign in Cardiff.

More than 80% of those who say they will back her rival insist their decision has already been made and they plan to vote for her as soon as possible.

Just 17% say they could still change their minds while 29% of Mr Sunak’s supporters say they could still vote differently.

In another blow, the vote was delayed after spy chiefs warned that the ballot papers “could be vulnerable to hackers”.

Originally, members of the Conservative Party were to receive a postal ballot with a code, specific to each voter.

Then they could then submit their choice by mail or online for the first time – and could change their decision later in the competition.

But this is no longer possible because it is feared that the vote will be manipulated.

Ms Truss, who for weeks has been the favorite to succeed Boris Johnson as Prime Minister, is backed by 60% of Tory MPs.

Just 26% said they supported former chancellor Mr Sunak, who launched a political blitz in a bid to catch up with his rival.
