AN EIGHT-year-old girl who ‘outdid herself in the face of adversity’ to make a positive impact has received an award from the Prime Minister.
Carmela Chillery-Watson of Market Lavington lives with muscle wasting disease and received a Points of Light award for her fundraising efforts in January 2021.
And yesterday Carmelagot to attend a reception at 10 Downing Street on Tuesday with the other winners.
She has managed to raise over 150,000 over the years for Muscular Dystrophy UK, a charity that means a lot to her.
Carmelas’ progressive muscle wasting disease is called LMNA congenital muscular dystrophy, which means his muscles weaken over time and children with it often don’t live to see their 20s.
Since her diagnosis at the age of three, Carmela and her family have worked to help fund research into potential treatments – and ultimately a cure – for others suffering from muscle wasting.
The Points of Light award recognizes outstanding volunteers who inspire others, something Carmela seems to do on a regular basis.
Last week Carmela completed her latest charity event, Wonder Wheels, raising 3,500 for Muscular Dystrophy UK and was joined by Paralympian star, Rachel Morris.
A team of 15 fundraisers, led by Carmelas’ mother Lucy, cycled 66 miles through Wiltshire villages on Monday August 1.
They were joined by Carmela for the final mile, riding a specially adapted tilt bike and wearing a Wonder Woman helmet.
Carmela led the cyclists across the finish line in West Lavington with a little help from one of her heroes, Paralympian cycling gold medalist Rachel Morris.
Carmela said: I felt proud and very happy to lead the team across the line, but my bike broke just before the last half mile, so Paralympian Rachel pushed me down the hill to at the finish line. It was an absolutely amazing feeling!
She said before meeting the Prime Minister: It’s awesome, I can’t believe it, it’s so amazing. I can’t wait to meet Boris to tell him don’t quit as you please.
Carmelas’ mum, Lucy Watson, added: “I’m so proud of Carmela. It will be great for her to meet other inspiring Points of Light winners at the Downing Street reception.”
To support Carmela, you can join her solidarity Wonder Wheels Cycling Challenge in August and to help it reach its goal of 5,000.

Drivers are no longer required to get quotes from just a few known insurance companies. Also, local and regional insurers can provide lower insurance rates for the same services. Accurate insurance estimates. Online quotes can only be accurate if the customers provide accurate and real info about their car models and driving history. Lying about past driving incidents can make the price estimates to be lower, but when dealing with an insurance company lying to them is useless.
