China announces new RMB 300m aid to flood-ravaged Pakistan

ISLAMABAD: China announced on Saturday to add another RMB 300 million to its financial aid to flood-ravaged Pakistan – bringing the total to RMB 400 million.

“Today, the Chinese government announced that it will donate an additional RMB 300 million worth of relief materials for Pakistan after the 100 million RMB worth of emergency relief supplies donated last week,” reads an announcement message. by the Chinese Embassy.

By declaration, the announcement was made by Mr. Luo Zhaohui, President of the China International Development Cooperation Agency (CIDCA).

Prime Minister Shehbaz Sharif on Saturday expressed his gratitude to Chinese President Xi Jinping for his RMB 400 million relief package for flood victims in Pakistan.

In a tweet on the social media platform Twitter, he said: “Very grateful to HE President Xi Jinping for the Chinese assistance package of 400 million RMB, up from 100 million RMB initially, for the victims. floods in Pakistan.

Meanwhile, the Chinese Foreign Ministry said China is closely monitoring the post-flood situation in Pakistan.

“Since the floods hit Pakistan, China has been following the situation closely. We reacted immediately and did all we could to provide humanitarian aid, Foreign Ministry spokesman Wang Wenbin said.

China will successively send several batches of urgently needed supplies to Pakistan. Earlier this week, the latest batch of Chinese aid to Pakistani flood victims, consisting of 3,000 tents, reached the port city of Karachi in southern Pakistan.

According to Wang, after the last batch of tents, the remaining supplies will be transported to the disaster areas as soon as possible. These tents were recovered from the Chinese province of Sichuan, which suffered a devastating earthquake in 2008.

At the time, Pakistan rushed to China’s aid and provided wholehearted assistance by sending all its stock tents to the disaster area, which deeply touched the Chinese people.

The Chinese Red Cross has provided US$300,000 in emergency cash assistance to the Pakistan Red Crescent Society and launched a handover ceremony in Islamabad this week.

Chinese companies in Pakistan’s southwest province of Balochistan donated $250,000 on September 1 to flood victims in the province.

In China, provinces, autonomous regions and municipalities directly under the central government act in various ways to express their sympathy or support for Pakistan.

The China International Development Cooperation Agency has set up a joint working group with Pakistan on implementing follow-up cooperation in emergency relief, Wang said.

Meanwhile, the Pakistan Embassy in China is appealing to relevant organizations, companies and kind-hearted people to collect funds, tents and other needed relief materials, according to reports.

In the future, China will continue to provide Pakistan with urgently needed aid and support its disaster relief work, Wang said.
