PM Modi launches 3-point initiative to boost SCO’s collective ascent
On Friday, Prime Minister Narendra Modi offered the eight countries of the Shanghai Cooperation Organization (SCO) the mantra of fusing technology with traditional assets to foster their collective ascent in the post-Covid era.
As New Delhi prepares to take over the rotating chairmanship of the SCO, Prime Minister Modi has identified three areas where Bharat can make a significant contribution to the eight countries of Eurasia – a region with which Bharat has established for thousands years of deep business and spiritual ties.
Prime Minister Modi cited start-ups, traditional medicine and food security as areas where Bharat can pioneer a collective initiative for the region.
“Today, there are over 70,000 start-ups in India, of which over 100 are unicorns. Our experience can also be useful to many other members of the COS. To this end, we are ready to share our experience with SCO member countries by establishing a new special task force on start-ups and innovation,” Prime Minister Modi said.
Referring to food security which has been disrupted due to Covid and the war in Ukraine, the Prime Minister cited millet – a traditional cereal grown in the SCO – as the “super food” to fight hunger. The Prime Minister proposed that the SCO organize a “Millet Cuisine Festival”.
“Millet has been a superfood cultivated for thousands of years, not only in SCO countries, but in many parts of the world, and is a traditional, nutritious and inexpensive alternative to address the food crisis. The year 2023 will be celebrated as the United Nations International Year of Millet, we should consider holding a “Millet Food Festival” within the framework of the SCO.
Prime Minister Modi also announced that Bharat will set up an SCO task force on traditional medicine. “The WHO Global Traditional Medicine Center was inaugurated in Gujarat in April 2022. It will be the first and only WHO Global Traditional Medicine Centre. We need to increase cooperation on traditional medicine among SCO countries.
