VERA FILES FACT CHECK: Chinas Xi Jinping was NOT replaced by a senior military officer

A Filipino Facebook (FB) page has posted a video echoing baseless rumors that Chinese President Xi Jinping faces jail in Beijing as he is supplanted by a Chinese People’s Liberation Army general (PLA). It’s not true.

On September 27, the fake video appeared with the title: God’s goodness! Chinese President Xi Jinping allegedly imprisoned in Beijing CCP replaced Li Qiaoming (Oh, no! Chinese President Xi Jinping is said to have been imprisoned in the Beijing CCP [Chinese Communist Party] placed Li Qiaoming).

The video’s narrator said the PLA allegedly attempted a coup in Beijing while Xi was absent at a summit in Uzbekistan. He also mentioned that Jennifer Zeng, a Chinese-born vlogger based in New York, uploaded a video to Twitter capturing the supposed coup in action.

Xi’s arrest and alleged coup are unfounded rumours. Even the narrator said it was speculation and did not provide any evidence to support his claim. The CCP has yet to make an official comment on the matter, but no legitimate news agency has reported on such events.

Xi also remains the president of China.

Zeng posted a short video on Twitter purporting to be taken from a military vehicle en route to Beijing. She pretended other senior CCP officials had arrested Xi, but later said a source told her it was not true.

Meanwhile, amid rumors of his arrest, Xi made his first public appearance at September 27 exhibition in Beijing since returning from a trip to Central Asia in mid-September.

The speculation has emerged during an apparent anti-corruption purge of top security officials ahead of a key CCP congress in October, when Xi expects an unprecedented third term as president.

Facebook page PH TV (created on November 1, 2021) posted the video, garnering over 5,500 reactions, 470 comments, 680 shares, and 214,000 views.
