Arrest warrant for former Pakistani Prime Minister Imran Khan for threatening a judge

Arrest warrant for former Pakistani Prime Minister Imran Khan for threatening a judge

A Pakistani magistrate on Saturday issued arrest warrants for former Prime Minister Imran Khan in a case of threats against a female judge, hinting he could be arrested.

Khan addressing a rally on August 20 had used controversial remarks against District and Extra Sessions Judge Zeba Chaudhry and a case was filed against him at Margalla Police Station in the capital while the Upper Islamabad court has initiated contempt proceedings.

In connection with the case, a local magistrate issued the arrest warrant at the request of the police.

Initially, Khan was booked under the terrorism laws, but the charges were dropped on the directive of the Islamabad High Court and the case was transferred from an anti-terrorism court to a court of normal sessions.

The bail granted to him by the counter-terrorism case also became ineffective after the case was transferred. Police said he failed to show up for the final court hearing on the case and the arrest warrant was issued to ensure his attendance.

It was rumored that Islamabad police had sent around 300 people to arrest Khan from his residence in Banigala on the outskirts of Islamabad, but police have denied the reports.

“There is no truth in this news and it is baseless,” Islamabad police said shortly after PTI supporters began gathering in Banigala ahead of any police action. The police asked people not to “listen to the propaganda”.

Interior Minister Rana Sanaullah told Geo News that Khan was not arrested and the arrest warrant was routine and bailable.

“He is [for] a bailable crime. There is no question of arrest,” said the Minister of the Interior.

Separately, Khan earlier today submitted an affidavit to the IHC in the contempt case for threatening the district and extra session judge, assuring the court he would never do anything in the future. that would undermine the dignity of a court and of the judiciary, especially lower judges. judicial.

The ousted prime minister further said he was ‘ready to apologise’ if the judge thinks he has crossed a ‘red line’.
