Indonesia launches investigative team to investigate deadly football stampede
Jakarta: Indonesian authorities have formed an independent investigation team to investigate Saturday’s deadly stampede after a football match in East Java province, the coordinating minister for political, legal and security affairs said on Monday. Mahfud MD.
The minister, who heads the investigation team, told a virtual press conference that the team had been tasked directly by President Joko Widodo with finding out the causes of the stampede which killed 125 people and injured the minus 320 others, and who would be responsible for them. for the incident.
“This team will work at most for a month to come. All findings and recommendations will be reported directly to the president,” Mahfud said.
The team members were made up of officials from relevant government ministries and institutions, professional football organizations, observers, academics and the media, he said.
Apart from setting up the team, Widodo had also instructed the country’s police and military institutions to investigate their officers and soldiers respectively who were allegedly involved in the stampede, Mahfud said.
According to local reports, Indonesian police have been criticized by the public as many believe the stampede happened after police fired tear gas into the crowd, causing panic among onlookers and a stampede at one exits from the stadium.
“In three days, the national police must impose disciplinary measures on its regional structure officers assigned to the area where the incident occurred. The police must also immediately name the suspects of all possible perpetrators,” Mahfud said.
“Meanwhile, the Indonesian military must impose sanctions and investigate all its soldiers who are found to have taken unnecessary actions that triggered the stampede,” he added.
