Voting began at 8am on Thursday for the first phase of the Gujarat Assembly elections in 89 of the total 182 seats.
Prime Minister Narendra Modi on Thursday urged voters in Gujarat, especially those exercising their franchise for the first time, to vote in record numbers.
He tweeted the call as the first phase of assembly elections were due to begin in his home country.
