Orhan Miroglu told Russian news agency Sputnik that Syria intended to postpone the meeting until after Turkey’s presidential election, which is due to be held on June 18 next year.
On Friday, the Reuters news agency reported that despite Russia’s mediation efforts, the Syrian president resisted a meeting with his Turkish counterpart.
According to the report based on three different Syrian sources, Assad rejected Russian President Vladimir Putin’s offer to meet Erdogan.
Two of the sources said Damascus believes such a meeting could back Erdogan ahead of next year’s Turkish elections, especially if Ankara achieves its goal of repatriating some of Turkey’s 3.6 million Syrian refugees.
Stating that there will be no rapprochement before the next Turkish poll, the source said: Why give victory to Erdogan for free? He added that Syria had also rejected the idea of a meeting of foreign ministers.
A third source, a Syrian diplomat, said that Damascus considers such a meeting pointless if it does not bring anything concrete, and what they have demanded so far is the complete withdrawal of Turkish troops.
Earlier, Erdogan said normalizing relations with crisis-ridden Syria was possible.
As relations between (Turkey) and Egypt take shape, relations with Syria can follow the same path in the next period, Erdogan said on November 27.
He was referring to an ongoing normalization process between Turkey and Egypt, which saw Erdogan meet his Egyptian counterpart, Abdel Fattah el-Sissi, at the FIFA World Cup in Qatar’s capital Doha. Ankara severed ties with Cairo in 2013 to protest the latter’s bloody crackdown on supporters of late Egyptian President Mohammed Morsi.
There is no place for hard feelings in politics, Erdogan also said.
Turkey severed ties with Syria in March 2012, a year after the Arab country found itself plagued by rampant and deadly violence carried out by foreign-backed militants and terrorists, including those believed to be supported by Ankara.
Since 2016, Turkey has also carried out three major ground operations against US-backed militants based in northern Syria.
The Turkish government accuses the militants, known as the People’s Protection Units (YPG), of having links to the Kurdistan Workers’ Party terror group.
Turkey has been launching airstrikes on northern Syria and Iraq since November 20, against what it calls hideouts belonging to the PKK.

Unlike physical insurance agencies, websites don't have a specific schedule and they are available at any time. Drivers that have busy working schedules, can compare quotes from anywhere and at any time, even at midnight. Multiple choices. Almost all insurance providers, no matter if they are well-known brands or just local insurers, have an online presence. Drivers are no longer required to get quotes from just a few known insurance companies. Also, local and regional insurers can provide lower insurance rates for the same services. Accurate insurance estimates. Online quotes can only be accurate if the customers provide accurate and real info about their car models and driving history. Lying about past driving incidents can make the price estimates to be lower, but when dealing with an insurance company lying to them is useless.
