Xi Jinping: China-Australia relations on track
TEMPO.CO, Jakarta – President Xi Jinping says that China’s relations with Australia move in the right direction. This is the latest sign of improving relations between the two countries, each being a major trading partner.
Xi made the remarks in an Australia Day congratulatory message to Australian Governor-General David Hurley, the news agency reported. China Xinhua.
“Australia and China have reviewed the past and looked to the future, making active efforts in the right direction to improve and develop China-Australia relations,” Xi said on Thursday, January 26, 2023.
Relations between China and Australia have been strained over the past three years over a range of issues, including trade. Recently, there have been signs that their relationship is heating up.
China imposed an unofficial ban on Australian products from coal to wine in 2020. Beijing imposed the measure after Australia called for an investigation into the origins of Covid-19 and imposed a 5G network ban on the giant Chinese telecommunications company Huawei.
Their trade minister has not met since then. But Australian Foreign Minister Penny Wong met her Chinese counterpart Wang Yi last month. It was the first visit to Beijing by an Australian minister since 2019.
Chinese President Xi Jinping met with Australian Prime Minister Anthony Albanese on the sidelines of the G20 summit in Indonesia in November 2022. This marked the start of a thaw in diplomatic relations.
In January, China allowed some companies to continue importing Australian coal.
Last week, Xinhua reported, without providing details, that Chinese Commerce Minister Wang Wentao would meet his Australian counterpart, Don Farrell, via video “in the near future”.
