Donald Trump launches the first presidential campaign of 2024

Washington: Former United States President Donald Trump has waged his first political campaign since announcing his candidacy for the 2024 presidential election, NHK World reported.

On Saturday, the former president held a rally in the southern state of South Carolina with the campaign mantra “Make America Great Again.”

While addressing the gathering at the rally, Trump criticized current US President Joe Biden for record inflation and illegal immigrants crossing the US southern border with Mexico.

“Joe Biden put America on the fast track to ruin and destruction,” Trump told NHK World.

He further said, “The 2024 elections are our only chance to save our country and we need a leader ready to do so from day one. Together we will finish the unfinished business of making America great again.

On November 15, Trump announced that he would seek the Republican Party’s nomination to run in the 2024 presidential election.

“In order to make America great and glorious again, I am announcing my candidacy for President of the United States tonight,” Trump said.

South Carolina is among the first voting states in the party’s process of nominating their candidates for the presidential race. Results in these states are said to affect the rest of the race.

Earlier he stopped in New Hampshire before starting his official campaign in South Carolina, saying he was ‘angrier’ about the country’s direction and vowed to return to the nation’s first primary state “many, many more times” as he looks to replicate his first-place finish in the Granite State in 2016, CNN reported.

“This is it,” Trump told New Hampshire GOP members at their annual meeting in Salem, adding, “We start here as a presidential candidate.”

In New Hampshire, Trump announced that incumbent GOP Chairman Stephen Stepanek would be added to his campaign as a senior adviser.

Observers say Trump is trying to get a head start by rushing into the crucial state early.

Some within the Republican Party have expressed concerns about Trump’s waning influence after a number of candidates backed by him lost in closely watched races in the midterm elections last year.

Meanwhile, some have voiced support for Florida Governor Ron DeSantis, whom they see as a new generation of conservative politicians and former Vice President Mike Pence, according to NHK World.

Earlier Saturday, Trump’s campaign sent out a fundraising email stating that “no other candidate is working this early to win every last vote”, and boasting of being “the number one Republican nominee for the President to campaign in the first two primary states”.
