Prime Minister Narendra Modi expressed his condolences on Monday for the loss of life in Turkey and Syria after a 7.8 magnitude earthquake rocked the countries.
“Distressed by the loss of life and material damage due to the earthquake in Turkey. Condolences to the bereaved families. May the injured recover soon. India stands in solidarity with the Turkish people and is ready to offer all possible assistance to deal with this tragedy,” PM Modi tweeted.
At least 360 people have been killed and hundreds are trapped in fear in the rubble after two back-to-back earthquakes struck central Turkey and northwestern Syria on Monday, the impact of which also been felt in Cyprus and Lebanon. The quake’s epicenter was in southeastern Turkey, the US Geological Survey (USGS) said, adding that the 7.8 magnitude quake struck at 04:17 local time (01:17 GMT). at a depth of 17.9 km (11 miles) near the town of Gaziantep.
Turkish President Tayyip Erdogan spoke with governors of eight affected provinces to gather information on the situation and rescue efforts, his office said in a statement.

Amid a frantic rescue operation, Turkey has also issued a Level 4 alarm calling for international help, AFP reported. At least 20 aftershocks were felt following the quake, with the strongest measuring 6.6, Turkish authorities said. In Syria, the earthquake hit the region with 4 million people displaced from other parts of the country.
