“Imran Khan will be arrested if new protests are launched”

LAHORE (Reuters) – Pakistani Interior Minister Rana Sanaullah warned Imran Khan on Monday that he would be arrested if he dared to launch further anti-government protests and accused Pakistani leader Tehreek-e-Insaf of engaging in the politics of unrest. Sanaullah fired the volley at the former prime minister as he addressed Pakistani Muslim League-Nawaz (PML-N) workers at a party convention in Multan, Punjab province, according to the Dawn newspaper.

The ministers’ warnings come days after Khan told his workers and supporters to prepare for prison Bharo Tehreek (fill prison movement) against the federal government for inflicting torture in custody on his party leaders and delaying the announcement of new general elections.

I ask people to get ready and wait for my call for bharo tehreek jail. There won’t be much space in Pakistani prisons to have them all, Khan, the 70-year-old former cricketer turned politician, said during his televised address from his Zaman Park residence here on Saturday.

Khan made the announcement after sedition cases were filed against his party’s senior vice president, Fawad Chaudhry, and former member of the National Assembly, Shandana Gulzar.

On Sunday, Sanaullah accused the Pakistani leadership of Tehreek-e-Insaf (PTI) of creating unrest.

In 2014, the PTI organized protest demonstrations and tried to stop the journey of progress and prosperity. Imran Khan is following the policy of turmoil in the form of long marches, sealing Islamabad under the guise of an election date, The Dawn reported, citing Sanaullah.

Regarding the PTIs Jail Bharo movement, the Home Secretary said he hoped that Khan would be sent to the same death cell where I was placed during my arrest, according to the report.

The minister warned that the federal government was ready to arrest Khan if he dared to start the protests, he said.

Speaking at a press conference on Sunday, former minister Farrukh Habib said PTI workers and leaders were waiting for the call from the Khans to launch the protests against the federal government.

The party leadership and the workers are not afraid to go to jail when Imran Khan calls. I’ll go to jail first, he said.

In November last year, Khan was forced to suspend his long march to Islamabad following an assassination attempt on him.

Similarly, in May 2022, Khan abruptly called off the Azadi rally, moments after his party members arrived in the federal capital.

Khan, who came to power in 2018, is the only Pakistani prime minister to be ousted in a vote of no confidence in parliament in April 2022.

Since his ousting, he has stepped up the ante on the ruling coalition to announce snap polls.
