ISLAMABAD A Pakistani court has granted bail to former Prime Minister Imran Khan in several cases against him, allowing his release following his dramatic arrest earlier this week.

In one session, a bench of the Islamabad High Court granted Khan two weeks bail in a corruption case. It was this case that led to his arrest on Tuesday by the court’s own paramilitary forces. They smashed a desk to free him.

In another session, a judge granted Khan bail until next Wednesday in a series of cases filed against him since his arrest.

Khan told reporters in the courtroom that he believed Pakistan’s military chief was responsible for his problems and said the chief was indeed running the country.

The military did not immediately respond to his accusation. The government accused the courts of bias towards Khan.

The 70-year-old politician still faces multiple corruption charges. The conviction would disqualify Khan from running in elections scheduled for later this year.

Khan and his supporters call the accusations “politically motivated.”

On Thursday, Pakistan’s Supreme Court ruled Tuesday’s arrest was “unlawful” and ordered Khan’s immediate release.

Analysts consider the move a victory for Khan, whose arrest this week sparked violent clashes in many Pakistani cities. Pro-Khan protesters have launched unprecedented attacks on powerful Pakistani military and police installations.

“Critics of the government will hail this judicial activism as proof that democracy is still alive,” said Michael Kugelman, director of the Wilson Center’s South Asia Center. “But it also means that we are seeing two parallel clashes, the main one between Khan and the state, but also between the Supreme Court and the state. In the context of the political chaos that is playing out, these two simultaneous clashes are likely to exacerbate Pakistan’s political instability to a large extent.”

Government and opposition leaders had started talks shortly before Khan’s arrest to try to reduce tensions, Kugelman said. But now, he says, “the gloves are off on both sides.”

Amid the chaos, the military accused what it called “evil elements” of inciting the attacks and accused the protesters of wanting to push Pakistan into “a civil war”.
