Georgia prosecutor investigating Trump says charging decisions will be made in August

Fulton County District Attorney Fani Willis, who investigated efforts by Donald Trump and his allies to nullify Georgia’s 2020 election, announced remote workdays for his staff in August and asked judges to refrain from in-person hearings for parts of this month, according to a letter obtained by CNN.

The letter, first reported by The New York Times, is the latest indication that Willis is likely to release his charging decisions during this time in August.

She had previously alerted law enforcement officials that she would announce if anyone faced charges between July 11 and September 1.

The letter outlines a handful of remote workdays for district attorney staff that span the first three weeks of August.

“This remote work will reduce the number of employees from the Fulton County Attorney’s Office at the Fulton County Courthouse and Government Center by approximately 70 percent,” Willis wrote.

Security concerns, along with securing recent cooperation agreements, have been major factors in pushing back Willis’ timeline to announce possible charges in his longstanding investigation of Trump and his allies.

She is considering potential charges of conspiracy and racketeering, which would allow her to bring charges against multiple defendants.

In his letter, Willis noted that throughout the remote work periods, some of his staff would continue to work full-time, including his “management team” and “all armed investigators.”

Willis also asked judges to limit in-person court dates to two weeks in August.

“I respectfully request that the judges do not schedule in-person trials and hearings during the weeks beginning Monday, August 7 and Monday, August 14,” Willis said in the letter.

The letter was sent to various officials, judges and local law enforcement officials in Fulton County.
