President Joko Widodo hopes CEPA negotiations between Indonesia and EU will be completed soon
During his meeting with the President of the Commission of the European Union (EU), Ursula von der Leyen, President Joko Widodo hopes that the negotiations concerning the Comprehensive Economic Partnership Agreement (CEPA) between Indonesia and the European Union (EU) can be completed soon.
HIROSHIMA – President Joko Widodo held a bilateral meeting on Sunday (21/5) with the President of the Commission of the European Union (EU), Ursula von der Leyen, at the Grand Prince Hotel, Hiroshima, Japan. During the meeting, President Joko Widodo expressed his hope that negotiations regarding the Comprehensive Economic Partnership Agreement (CEPA) between Indonesia and the European Union (EU) could be completed soon.
“As for the Indonesia-EU CEPA, Indonesia expects the negotiations to be completed no later than next year,” the Indonesian president said.

The two leaders also share the same view regarding the importance of the Indonesia-EU CEPA negotiations to be concluded immediately. On the other hand, regarding the EU regulations on deforestation, President Joko Widodo said that since the beginning of the discussion, Indonesia had expressed objections to these regulations. According to him, the regulations could hamper trade and harm small Indonesian farmers.
“The benchmarking process with a deadline from 2020 must be really open and objective. For information, Indonesia’s deforestation rate for 2019-2020 has dropped by 75% to 115,000 hectares. This is the rate the lowest since 1990 and continues to decline,” the Indonesian president said.
