The former prime minister, who was ousted in a vote of no confidence last April and has since campaigned for a snap election, was detained at the Islamabad High Court on May 9 in a corruption case.

His brief detention, which was later declared illegal, sparked protests and attacks on state and military installations.

Since then, thousands of workers and leaders belonging to the Khan Pakistan Tehreek-e-Insaf (PTI) party have been detained, many of whom have quit the party and even politics. Some of those involved in the violence will be tried in military courts, according to the government.

Khan tweeted that the arrest warrants were issued on a public holiday and were kept secret for eight days; he was not told that the corruption investigation against him had turned into an investigation and that the paramilitary force, the Pakistan Rangers, had used “force” to arrest him.
